hey guys, just wanted to let you all know of this situation so you could all be on the lookout. there was an e-mail i got today from who claimed to be paypal. it said that it was waiting for a verification of a charge to my credit card. There was a link that said to dispute this charge click here. so when you click it it takes you to a page that looks like paypal page and wants you to enter you login info. it appers that it wants you to enter you login info so then it can someone can get into your account. beware of this because i noticed it wasnt a secure page. then i started checking things like my credit card and help on paypal. They have odviously had these situations before since they precisely explained what the "spoof" e-mails look like.... anyway just wanted to inform you all

I get those every now and then. Any email that asks me for my password is automatically deleted. I also try to avoid using Paypal as much as possible. I don't fully trust them and their anti-gun stance pisses me off.

Ebay owns Paypal.

I get them quite often and I just forward them to [email protected] I also forward the fake ones "from ebay" to [email protected]

Been awhile since I used them, but I believe PayPal is owned by eBay now. So if one is against guns, I would imagine the other is too.

I got an email supposedly from PayPal a few months ago. It said it was confirming my password change. Which was funny, since I hadn't used PayPal for anything for about a year. In the email there was a link to click to "verify" my change. I decided that would be a bad idea. So I deleted email, went to PayPal's site directly and deleted my account. Under the "reason" I told them that someone was fishing for my information.

yeah when i clicked the link and it wanted my login info and the page was not secured, thats when i got a suspecious.

by anti-gun stance you mean they wont let you buy/sell guns on ebay or what?

That's pretty common, it's called a "phishing attack". Basically, they're fishing for information from you. I often times get emails supposedly from my bank (And often times banks that I've never done business with) asking me to verify my account information. The best thing to do is just delete them, and never log into any site that does anything with your financial information by clicking a link in an email. Always open a new browser window, and type the address in yourself.

Also, both IE7 & Firefox 2.0 web browsers have anti-phishing filters built into them. I highly recommend Firefox.

Phishing, phishing. Anytime you receive an email about your backaccount or paypal or anyother institution that you deal with ALWAYS be observant of the site you are directed to from the email. You will notice that the domain name or ip address is NOT the site you thought you were going to. If that is the case then DON'T enter any personal info and CLOSE the window.

You can think of it this way, someone you have never met, hands you a cashier's check but entirely written out in pencil, not embossed and colored with crayon. The check is for $10,000 Canadian dollars.

Would you accept the check and try to case it or would you in looking at it see that it is a fake and just toss it?

Unfortunately, with todays technology, you have to be aware of different information that others twist to confuse you to swindle you out of your assetts.

If you accept a link in an email and are not observant of the domain/ip address you are directed to, then you have no business being on the web.

Sorry, I will step down from my soap box.

Another way to check is that paypal and banks have their own sites and usually will send an "internal" message to you account on their site. Similar to your messages on this site. If it is not from them then you will not have a message about the situation there.

It is not paypals fault and paypal is not as insecure as some make it out to be. It is as secure as any back you have been using. Today any one that has a web site can be hacked into. Therefore nothing is really as secure as say it was 25 years ago where nothing was on line. Security is still being developed and up in place but there are hackers growing up also. Just like in the days of Bonnie and Clyde and other famous back robbers. Today they do it with a keyboard instead of a gun and explosives.

In today's world, if you are on-line, you can get mugged and never even know it.

Not necessarily buying guns on ebay. They won't let you use your account to pay for any firearm you may buy from an online dealer. Plus, ebay and paypal are really retarded when it comes to so called "assault weapons parts" such as mags, stocks, etc.

I don't know the real reason for ebay/paypal not allowing guns/parts.

And I'm not defending them, but I can see a point of not.

We all are thick in a country when now it is all too prevelant where there is lack of self taking responsibilities for their own actions. It's always someone else fault that they got killed/injured because they chose to play russian-roulette with a semi-automatic.

So it would be much 'cheaper' avoiding litigation from those morons by not participating in the "distribution of known dangerous goods", as some lit lawer may state it.

There needs to be a Darwinism check with these law suits. If you were a dumb-a then you are getting a rocket ride with other dee-dee-dee's to a really purdy place where you can roam free amongst the others chasing solar flares and if you catch one you can keep it as your very own pet wouldn't that be nice.

About a year ago when this scam was new I was stupid and answered that email. Couple days later $500 had been taken out of my account through a atm in a different country. The withdrawls were done in different amouts and the only reason they only got $500 is because my bank only allows $500 a day out of the atm. I got the money back but at the time I answered that email I didnt know about those scams.

    • I understand that. The price is what it is, though. The price is what oil costs today, where our choices have led us, where supply is, and where demand is, in the market that is. Speculation is for futures, what we think the price will be, but with incomplete information at the time the price is forecast. I know you know this, but you appear to be intent on making a secondary point here about what you think the market could or should be, if only other choices.   In 1975 it became illegal to export US Crude. I'm conflicted on what the best answer is. Free markets allow export in pursuit of profit. But there is also a lot to gain by producing and consuming our own oil here. How do you reconcile it?
    • That sir is a choice. And even if it were not for all the reasons stated, this disruption has zero to do with the reality of the actual logistics and everything to do with the greed of SPECULATION. Spot price is irrelevant to reality.
    • What I think you're saying is there is supply here at home, and in Venezuela, and we could ease pricing if only it were favorable to do so.   Well, yes?   But that's not the current market. Supply isn't what could someday exist, if only, it's what producers are willing to produce and sell at a certain price point.   The national price of single family homes would come way down if we'd just slap together a few million homes this summer.   RAM and GPUs would get a lot cheaper if we just set up some factories to produce a bunch more and stopped using it to build out AI data centers.
