engine swap

I'm in the process of getting a 1982 GMC 3500 Dually 4x4. It currently has a 6.2 Diesel and a 400 Auto trans. They both need work. I would like to keep the 400 Trans but replace the Diesel wit a 350 gas engine. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

You'll basically need an entire new fuel system from the gas tank forward, and perhaps a new gas tank (tanks if it has the old saddle tanks...awesome setup BTW). You'll also need new engine mounts. I do NOT know for sure if the 6.2 (a junk motor anyway) and the 350 have the same bolt pattern for the transmission, so you MAY need a different trans. IF you can keep the trans, you'll need the 350 flex plate to bolt it to the torque converter. You'll also need all the accessory brackets for the 350, along with the starter.

This is where I'm not sure but I think it may be an issue. My dad had an '86 truck like this one that had a 24-volt system. Yours may too, and you'll need to convert it to a 12-volt system. I do not know how easy this is.

I would suggest getting a 454 for the one ton. A 350 would not have enough torque as that 6.2 L does. If your going to do all of that work for converting the fuel system and it is a 12v setup on that truck if I think so, due to parallel connection of the batteries get a 454. 350 is good for 15-25 series of trucks. But for economy, get a turbo charged 6.5L and have good hauler. the 6.2L is a good diesel, made by Detroit Diesel, just turbo that engine and go from there, not like the Olds 350 Diesel. If gas, go with the 454, diesel turbo.

The only R/V trucks that had a 28V system was the Military trucks all others had 12V systems. A Dually need a 454 to haul all that weight and payload.

My dad's old '86 WAS a military truck (or was built while the military trucks were being built) and had the 24 volt system. Pain in the ass, let me tell ya.

Yes your dads truck was originally a military truck because the truck was entirely different. chassis, body, paint (teflon) and other options.
