Check engine light retrieval

Sorry if this has been asked before. I did a comprhensive search and looked through the tech articles and for stickies, but I just did not find an answer.

I know on my old 92 Z71 I could jump the computer scanner plug with a paper clip to blink my way through the trouble codes. Now, I have a friend with a 2001 Yukon that threw a code. In some of my newer vehicles I have had (Jeep, etc) you could cycle the key off-run-off a certain number of times to have the trouble codes print on the digital odometer.

My question: Is there any way for me to retrieve the codes without heading across town to Autozone or Advance? I would like to diagnose it before he gets too far. That being said, I did check the fuel filler cap and gave it a quick test drive. Nothing seemed wrong. My guess is O2 sen. but who knows. They only drive this thing around town so I don't think they even check fuel consumption.

Thanks for the info.

As far as I know, you'll need a code reader to pull the codes.

You can get a simple inexpensive code reader from most auto-parts stores.
