2005 Silverado/ 4x4 issue

I engaged my 4 wheel drive this weekend and it seems fine driving straight but as I turned either left or right I would get resistance and a noise. Almost a grinding noise but not grinding. It's hard to describe but it felt very "jerky" and resistant. any thoughts? I have an appointment to service it Friday at the dealership. It's still under warranty at 30,000 miles.

the noise your reffering to is a bind. the drivetrain is trying to turn all the wheels the same speed. but when you turn the wheel the tires all need to rotate at

different speeds and when your in 4wd the drivetrain doesn;t want that.

but if your using 4wd in slippery conditions, you won't notice the bind because the tires can now slip on the slippery surfaces and relieve the bind up.

this is why it's not recommended to drive in 4wd on dry pavement.

so it's normal and your dealer should tell you the same.

I was thinking the same thing. Were you testing the 4wd on a paved surface?

Thanks for the info. It was rainy and icy so that's why I had it in 4wheel drive. What you said does make sense though. I just never recall it acting like that before when I drove it in 4 wheel drive on semi-dry pavement. Since it's stil covered under warranty I'm going to have them check it over on Friday (plus I need an oil change).

Yeah the jerky feeling you're describing is quite normal for a vehicle with its 4 wheel drive engaged. Your dealer will probalby tell you everything is perfectly fine, either that or 'can not duplicate'
