steering column rattle

I just bought a 2004 Silverado that makes a knocking sound under the dash/hood when you turn or hit a small bump (steering column rattle), I test drove a 2005 and it did the same thing, is this a defect? Dealer says it is the steering knuckle needs greased or replaced -
