My truck is just now a year old, I put new Silverstars in wgen it was new, I've replaced both sides once, and the passeneger side is out again. THESE THINGS SUCK! (nice and bright though)

I'm putting in a set of PIAA's today, I'll let you know what I think of these.

these higher output bulbs simply trade filament life for brighter more efficient operation. I was thinking of switching to these for the high beam only. what do you think?

Did anything touch the glass on thr bulb before or while you were installing them? I've had the same Silverstars on my Suburban for almost four years.

I agree on the touching the glass. Any oil from fingers will cause them to fail prematurely. Having said that, I have heard lots of complaints about longevity or lack thereof. I get about 2-3 years out of mine. I have them in the low beams, high beams, and fog lights. The fogs don't get used much. I personally don't mind replacing them every couple to few years. It is a fair trade off for much better lighting IMO.

Depends on the style of housing that the bulb is inserted to, temperatures, and if you touch the bulb. A friend just turned his Silverstars on in his Subaru (glass housing, not plastic like GM) at 10 degF and both blew within a few seconds. He's had to replace his a few times already in varying conditions (he's careful not to touch the bulbs).

He just switched to the high output GE bulbs...we'll see how those last.

I've loved the silverstars but haven't had great luck with longevity either. It really comes down to the point that if you drive a lot at night, and like the extra light, you'll end up paying for it...thru additional bulbs if you go with silverstars....

Always very carefull about that, have worked in automotive for over 20 years, can't imagine how many times I've seen that, so not me.

I have had one in my bike for 2 years now with no problems..

I also put them in th etruck when I bought it.. (November 06) We will see how they work out in the truck.

I run Wagner True Views and they are far better than stock but I will admit they will not last as long as a std bulb.

I also dicovered that in a single bulb system like on my Caravan that I travel in for work, you better not hold both high and low on for an extended period. They will explode.

I was driving at night about 2 weeks ago in some pretty bad rain on a small country road and was using my High beam flash option to cheat the system and run both high and low beams at the same time. After about 15 mins, one of them blew out on both low and high. Once I inspected it, I discovered it really did blow out. It exploded and sent hot glass all into my plastic lens. It was hot enough that it melted into the plastic and is stll there.

I will know better next time.

FYI:

Silverstars only have a one yr warranty, and will traditionally last about that!

This from Sylvania, as I questioned my failure in less than 9 months.

I also am one who had these in my old `97, for 4 years, no problems there!! Brighter light, less duration of bulb life. So, I guess that is why the came out with the newer version of Silverstars with longer life.

Let us know on the pIAA

My '03 just turned 4 this month and I've had the same set of Silverstars(hi and lo) for the life of the truck. No problems whatsoever.

You might find this to be interesting reading. Many here will not agree with the opinions of the author on whether or not your lights are actually brighter but his explanation of why your Silverstars are burning out more quickly is likely pretty close to the mark.

Hope you find it as interesting as I did.

Very interesting. Wish I read this before I spent all that money on the Piaas. I guess I'll see what happens... Thanks.

    • I have thought an EV might have some practical value in extending the life of the ICE members of ones fleet. Now....I'm convinced of it. I've been letting my better half access Raven (Mitsubishi Mirage) for her needs while Dizzy has been in the shop. Being the fuel freak I am and given the fact Raven is capable of over 60 mpg in clean air on a warm day I was taken back by the wife's ability to take a car that had used a half a tank of gas that to that point had returned a value of 57 mpg and return in with a decimating 51 mpg for that same tank in that same day in a 15 mile round trip of short hop errands and a stop in the drive through at Micky D's.  😱   Trust me on this. It would take the remainder of that tank driven on the highway to return that tank to just 54 mpg. This is not a Mitsubishi issue. This is an ICE issue that is magnified in vehicles capable of such high fuel economy values. On a percentage basis your 1500 does the same thing. Short hopping an ICE consumes a good deal more fuel and in doing so provides zero additional useable outputs. That entire volume of fuel is wasted in diluting the cylinder walls oil films, creating crankcase moisture and acid content and the resultant wear.    Enter the SLATE. All of that is avoided and the ICE's advantage in range and made useful at reduced wear for your ICE!   Kind'a cool.
    • Back in the day people would buy cars based on performance. The charger posted does 0-60 in 3.3 seconds. And it’s fully loaded.  It has a decent warranty and will fit most anyone’s needs. Remember the original Hemi? 90 day warranty. 25K mini truck or that car? I’d go with the car. It wouldn’t fit my perimeter. If I could just talk my wife out of her Genesis. It would be perfect for her.
    • Let's pivot this back. Someone said they wanted pictures.   Even better, there's already video. Pre-prod prototypes are already on the road and they're letting the press drive them.   JerryRigEverything did a good review. I really enjoy his content and EV adventures, so I was thrilled when he had the chance to review a Slate:
    • The Charger EV was stillborn. Wrong car at the wrong price for Dodge's intended audience. Now at a good price with fire-sale discounts, and still not selling, it's still very much the wrong car. Again, Dodge's intended audience. I believe a lot of Stellantis' EV blunders were all under Tavares' regime at Stellantis...the board convinced him to move on. Neat car, just wasn't received on the level that would sustain mass production.   Dodge is headed in a better direction for its core business. I didn't think there was anything left to get excited about re: the Durango after its 15 year run, but they're just now releasing a 392 version that should price out in the low 40's. Nicely done. I'm not sure I would touch anything Stellantis makes with a 10' pole these days, but the Durango is still mostly parts designed like 3 parent companies ago so maybe it's still OK?
