I'm looking a maybe a diesel but I own a pool cleaning business and I make alot of short stops .... so its like i'm at a house for 15-20mins than drive 1/2 mile and stop again...

is this going to be hard on the engine I heard that the diesel engines don't like short trips....

maybe i'll be better off with the 6.0 gasser

It's going to be hard on any engine!

Except an electrical.. maybe you need a Prius with a roof rack and a trailer :-)

The diesel would be fine, I'd just suggest leaving it running while you're cleaning pools...I've seen truckers not shut off their trucks for almost an hour because it's easier on the engine/starter to just stay running.

You better have a high-idle feature if you plan to let it idle for any extended period of time. Diesels don't generate enough heat at their normal idle rpm - the end result could be "wet-stacking." When this is done over and over your engine could be damaged. The high idle will keep you exhaust gas temperature above 275* and help prevent this problem. Next time you walk by a big rig that's idling for an extended period you'll probably notice that it's idling rather fast...like 1200 rpm or higher to prevent WS.

I don't see a dmax being a problem. These new diesels are much different than the diesels of the past. In fact during the summer my glow plugs rarely even come on except for the first start of the day.

Since you are in the pool cleaning business then you will most likely be using your truck in a warm climate. So I don't see any problems.

The Dmax has a high idle that can be activated, but it only works in below freezing temps. And as far as extended idlinggoes, in some states and metropolitan areas it is against the law to idle the truck for over 5 minutes.

Diesel's don't cool down fast. They have much larger coolant and oil capacities. Don't be surprised if it doesn't cool down at all in 20 minutes. I have an insulated garage and my last diesel actually kept it much warmer due to the amount of heat it would radiate -- still glad I went back to a gasser. Don't leave it running either. That's no longer the rule with the newer diesels.

If you think you need a diesel then get one, I had a Duramax lly and a year after I bought it I sold my boat , go figure, so I really didnt need it anymore, my trips to work are 7 miles each way and in the winter the truck never really heated up going to work so in the winter when I got my oil changed I was in the back with the guy changing it and everytime in the winter months he and I found traces of moisture in the oil so he ask me if I ran the truck alot to get her up to operating temp. and I said no not all the time and he told me and ive heard it before that when you dont bring motors up to operating temp the motor will condensate (sweat), gas motors are not near as bad cause they heat up faster and burn the moisture out alot quicker. I just went back to a gas motor and glad I did cause I just couldnt justify keeping it with the higher maintance cost, price of Diesel fuel ,looking for fuel, getting bad fuel and clogging the filter, water in the fuel , Diesels are meant to be drivin and worked and not for short trips, and with the new ULSD fuel coming out which will cut down on the lube of the lift pump and injectors who knows how much it will shorten the life of them and ill be d**n if iam going to keep adding fuel addtives to keep the lube in for the fuel system so I just didnt want to deal with it anymore for something I didnt have a use for. If I had a use for the truck and put more miles on it I might still have it.
