5.3 vs 6.0 on a 07 crew cab

What would be a better set up to tow with and just general driving.... I'm not to worried about towing my work trailer what might weight as much as 2k but the boat that is around 5k I'm more worried about....

 

I tow my work trailer around town little highway but not much...

 

Boat I tow around town 4 miles to the ramp 4 times a week but I do tow couple of times a year 400 miles round trips on all highways....

 

 

5.3 L with 4.10 axle

 

or

 

6.0 L with 3.73 axle

 

 

I'm looking at getting a 1500 crew cab LTZ 4x4 with the 20" wheel and you can't get the max towing with that...

My 5.3 with 3.73 gears does a good job towing my 4000 lb boat. My towing experience says gears are very important. I would go with the 4.10 and the 5.3.

Go with the VortecMax package with the 4:10 gears....There is one on the lot close to me I chacked out. It's GMC Sierra V-Max black with leather for MSRP 34k....

I towed 4500lbs with a 5.3l and 3.73's, it was easy. With 4.10's it would be that much easier.

If your worried about towing just get the Max Towing Package with the 4.10 gears. Would tow your boat nicely with the higher towing capacity. If you want 20s just buy them aftermarket chrome ones look better anyways imo. However at the same time the 5.3 with 4.10 would probably tow good as well. 6.0 is just going to be even better.

For your needs the 5.3L with 4.10's should be more than adequate......but:

More power is always nicer.

It all comes down to if you want more power,are you willing to pay more for it and sacrifice a bit of gas mileage for it.

Also if you even think you are going to get something bigger to pull or do more long distance pulling then the 6L is the way to go.

If you really want 20's I'd go aftermarket too,then you get a unique look instead of the stock(everybody has them) package,for not a whole lot more.

Lots of times it all comes down to $$$$$.

I'd say for just daily driving and towing the 6.0 is just simply a superior engine in every way other than fuel milage and that would be deleted with the change of gear ratios. The 5.3 is a great engine and i've owned several of both 5.3 and 6.0 all the different variations of both, and the 6.0 is just alot more stronger engine throughout the power band. As far as rims go, just get aftermarket, they can be had for around the same price "probably cheaper and just look a world better. Guy i know has a identical 07 sierra with factory 20's mine has aftermarket and there is no comparison between the look of the two. Good luck and either way you're gonna love it.

I have driven 2 new 07's, a 5.3 w/3.73's, was very impressed with it's resposniveness, to the floor power was adequate but not great. the 6.0/4:10's seemed sluggish, but to the floor was mixed, sometimes it went awesome, sometimes it felt like it died, wondering if it's the torque management programming issue? anyway, for daily driving with towing just part time and expecially for your very short trips, i think the 5.3 would be fine. would like to drive a 5.3/4:10's but haven't seen/found one yet.

note: my old 02-6.0/4:10 'felt' better than the new one power wise. don't know why as they were both same drivetrain, and the new 6.0 was the Max (which is really a joke if you look at the old vs. new 6.0 performance curves). and currently i'm driving an 8.1 so keep that in mind.

one factor though is they both rode and steered like a nice sedan, very impressed with both of them in that regard.

I test drove a 5.3L with 4.10 gears and when not towing it was annoying on the highway as the cruise RPM's are quite high. The 3.42's are too light for towing that kind of weight IMO. I think the 3.73's are a nice in between gear and coupled with the 6.0L should be more than addequate to tow 5000 lbs.

Im gettin a 6.0L w/ 3.73's in about two weeks... I'll let you know how it feels... I tow a variety of stuff and up to 13,000#'s Obviously not w/ a 1500, but thats why i have an old 2500 diesel... Its my work truck.

 

Im gonna say go w/ the 6.0 you wont notice that much mpg difference, and you'll be happy you had the extra power.

 

I have a 5.3L w/ 3.73 and im not satisfied w/ the way it pulls, hence why im upgrading... Ive put up w/ it for 4 years and im starting to tow heavier stuff more frequently.

I vote that you get the 6.0. It's a great motor, and from my experience I think you'd be happier with the bigger motor and the taller gears.
