A few stereo questions..

I am looking to put a system in my 01 2500HD. I have done my research on speakers, and I believe that I want A Polk audio component system for the front, and just speakers and tweeters for the back. Then I would like to put in an Alpine head unit. My questions are, will I need to run new wiring through my doors for my speakers? What the heck is the point of crossovers, and where do I mount them? Will just that head unit put out enough power to make the speakers sound good and have decent bass? I just don't want to spend a crap load of money on this because stereos arent my big thing, I like making things powerful, but my stock stsyem sucks so bad that I just cant take it anymore. I also plan on deadening the doors, not sure with what, but I know I'm going to do it.

Heres the fronts, I dont plan on buying the momo ones, just the regular ones that are the same price... http://cgi.ebay.com/POLK-AUDIO-db6500-6-1-...1QQcmdZViewItem

Rear doors... http://cgi.ebay.com/Polk-Audio-DB460-4x6-2...VQQcmdZViewItem

Head unit, I wont buy a used one like this, its just to get the point across... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Alpine-CDA-...sspagenameZWDVW

I installed a system in my 02 last summer. Let me address a few of your questions/concerns. I don't think you're going to be impressed without amplification. With that in mind yes I'd run new speaker wires throughout. The crossovers separate the highs and lows and send them to the correct speaker in the component set. I hid mine in the center console of my truck underneath the drink holder so I could change the switch positions if I so desired. If you don't really care about stereo you might just want to consider getting some decent speakers and leaving your stock head unit in place. Don't get speakers that are designed for power though, get something that will work well w/ the stock unit. If it's an 01 w/ the factory speakers still installed odds are that at least 2 of them are trashed anyway. As far as sound deadening goes....why? If you're not looking to spend much money then you're barking up the wrong tree here. If you do decide to deaden it then check out Second Skin Audio.....they have everything you need at much cheaper prices than the competition.

Well, on the deadening issue, I don't plan on doing it with body putty or w/e. One of my friends just shoved plastic inside his doors. It doesnt make any noise, and it holds sound in a lot better that it did without the plastic. I doubt I will take the time to do it though, because I will get too lazy. Will it sound alright with those speakers and that head unit I posted? I plan on getting an amp when I get a little bit of cash, buy right now I don't have that much. As far as changing wires goes, where is a good place to get them, and how involved is it to put them on?

You've got to decide now whether you're adding an amp. If you are, you'll run a signal wire to the amp then the speakers are fed from the amp. If you're using the head unit all speakers are fed from that unit. So, if you change to an amp all the wiring needs to be re-done.

Ok, thanks. Do I really need an amp? I would rater save the cash, but I want a nice sound. I know most people who have aftermarket systems say bose sucks, but for me its pretty darn impressive. If I can have this system sound just as good, if not better with those speakers and head unit without an amp, I will be happy.

I would say just replace the speakers in the doors with the ones you listed and just leave the original head unit. Polk speakers are good speakers and you will definitely get better sound with those, compared to the stock ones. After you get all those changed out, see if you get enough bass out of them. If not, the easiest way to get a little more bass is to get a Clarion SRV303, a slim 7" subwoofer that's easy to install. You can usually find them out there on EBay for around $100. Your sound system should sound great after those changes! :)

Wow, that is the perfect sub for me. Now I know when you get into subs you must get an amp, so we'll see. I am going to try it first without an amp. I don't know what those Polks will hit like, but I guess I'll find out. My main question now is do I need to replace the wires from the head unit to the speakers?

Also... Alpine type R's or those Polks??

Someone give me a verdict, I've got the cash so I need to know whats better. The polks I have posted above, or the Alpine type R's??

Neither are better. Go with what you like. Everybody has different tastes in tonal characteristics.

I like MB Quart in the truck and Klipsch in the house...Some people find both of those brands to be way too "bright"...But I like them.

Well i went ahead and bought the Polks... It came to like $220 with shipping, so I don't have enough for a nice head unit right now, so I was wondering if it will be ok to run those speakers on the stock one for a while..

if you are gonna get aftermarket components, you NEED to feed them speakers more power. and your aftermarket radio alone isnt gonna do it.

if you dont get an amp for your components and decide to power them with your radio, you arent using your speakers to th eir full potential. so amp is a MUST with components.

if you arent serious about car audio, no need for dynamat or any of the sound deadning material. cause they arent cheap...

if you want slim woofers, the new sony ones are actually pretty good. they are slim, good bass and looks pretty dope.

polks are good, look into kicker ks, i had them in my truck before i switched them out with my rs.
