Wiring Question

First off, if this is the wrong location for this, just tell me WHERE I should post and I will move it.

OK - What I want to know is if the positive and ground behind cig lighters is the best place to wire in a toggle switch for an in-cab accessorry.

IF SO, can you please let me know and how to easily remove and gain access to rear of cig lighters?

Na, this is the right place to post this. I had alot of trouble when I tried to remove the cigarette lighter(took me like an hour, lol) in my 2000 Sierra. I wire all my accesories into the radio harness's 12+ or ignition and its much easier to just take the dash cover off and remove the radio. You could always do a quick wire into the fuse box also....

hi 1999. I think the cigarette lighter only runs off a 10 amp fuse, so as long as you arent going to use more than 10 amps.

The way Ive ran a wire outa the fuse panel was i got one of those crimp on wire connectors, you know the ones with a metal U shape used for screwing the wire to something? and I snipped off one half of the U. Then stuck that into one of the Auxilary fuse spaces. It was kinda ghetto, but it worked

For the Ground, just anywhere that attaches to the frame. Like the metal reinforcement behind the dash. I usually use an electric screw gun to drive one of those self tapping screws in. and run a ground wire to that with another one of those U connectors.

I would personally never tap into any factory wiring. If I was shopping for a used car and saw a bunch of crap tied into the radio harness, cigarette lighter, etc... I'd never buy it.

If you want to run something that doesn't draw much current, you can get by with a fuse tap. If you want to run a lot of things or something that draws a lot of current, run a new wire from the battery with an inline fuse to your accessory or a fuse block.

personaly if you want a clean look at your fuse panel then just go and buy the pins that fit your fuse panel(the ones the wires are crimped too) and crimp your wire and insert it into an empty slot in the panel and put a fuse in, thats what i always do, keeps it clean and looking stock plus its easer to keep up with your fuses for things and all because you can just write them down in the empty slots on the fuse layout panel
