Incorrect Odometer Readings?

Well actually my buddy just bought a 07 classic 2500 HD RCLB with the 6.0 about a month ago and hes been having problems with the odometer jumping up to fast. The speedometer seems to read accurately but the odometer just seems to be going up really fast in compared to the places he goes{around town}. He went down to a town thats 10 miles one way and back and he said the odometer read 200 miles since he left the house. I would say hes had it for a month give or take and he now has 5000 miles on it. He brought it back to the dealer and they told him that they couldn't find a problem and that they couldn't replace the odometer without him writing a letter to GM. I just told him to think of it this way......your getting pretty good gas mileage at that rate hahahaha. I'm just curious if any of you guys have came across this problem.

Donno what the problem might be, but that's going to burn up the warranty, mileage wise, in a big hurry.

This sounds bad, hopefully GM will do something with it...don't think there is anyway to prove that it's wrong unless they find something causing the defect.

Put the truck on a dyno and set it to run for exactly one mile. If the odometer reads 2 miles, then you can be sure you have a problem!

I would bet this a problem with sensor that is measuring distance/speed and not a problem with the display on your dashboard. Someone may have programmed in incorrectly, say for a different tire size.

thats a good idea about the Dyno. I bet if he did that and had a report of sorts from the shop he had it done at the Dealer would have to follow it up.

As proof of inconsistencies with the speedo and odometer, you could also use a hand-held GPS unit (Garmin, etc) to measure your speed and distance.

When comparing the speed displayed on my GPS with the speed on my '01 2500HD (8.1) Crew Cab with the original tire/wheel combo, my truck speedo is off about about 1.5 miles per hour at 60 mph and 2.0 miles per hour at 80 mph. The truck speedo displays a faster speed than the GPS unit.

To cross-verify the GPS unit's accuracy, I did a similar check in my wife's Hummer H3 and the speedo matched the GPS unit perfectly. I also did a check in my Sonoma pickup and it also matched perfectly.

Just a thought on providing easy proof to the dealership.
