Crank Re-learn

I got a quick question for those with a tuned pcm, specially a wait4me tune. I called around some places about the crank re-learn and got some unexpected quotes and answers. They said that it takes about one hour to do the re-learn, but they said that it would have to go through a bunch of “sequences” checking all the parameters and communicating with all the other control modules in the truck. I’m afraid they will wipe out the custom tune in the process, plus they want to charge $95 to do this. I live in Modesto CA, it’s a fairly large city, but only the GM dealers seem to have the “tech 1” tool to do the re-learn. Could I run the truck for a while without doing the crank re-learn, or would I risk breaking something? Does anyone know of any places around here that can to the job for cheaper or just the re-learn without messing with the rest of the PCM?

You need to find someone local to you that has hp tuners of efi live.. Its not a hard process and it doesnt take up to a hour.. you simply start the crank relearn process and rev the engine.. There is no way id pay 95 dollars.. Find a dyno or performance shop around there and talk to them.. Most of them are more than willing to help out.. Heck id do it for free if i was closer.. BTW I got a pcm on my 5.3 at 50k miles and never did the crank re learn.. It was still running fine at 100k miles when I pulled it..

When I had Jesse reprogram my PCM, I installed it and that was it. 5 minutes and we were going down the road.

Although I have heard of people having to do the crank re-learn, I don't know what percentage actually need to have it done. I don't believe the percentage is very high though. I think it is the exception rather than the rule.

That may be a good question for a poll.

If you have the SES light on you need the crank re-learn. Its simple all the tech has to do is hookup the scanner goto crank relearn step on the brake and floor the throttle until the engine cuts off. All done.

Vehicle can be driven but should be done ASAP.

thanks for the input guys. I did a few more calls to the local "performance" shops, the ones with dynos 'n stuff. But nobody seems to be able to help me. I called one place that has efi live, but the guy said he only works on hondas/acuras. then I called another shop that seems to work on any brand of car, but he said that around here only the GM dealers have the tech 1 stuff. I can't believe it, this is not some "small" town, somebody must have it. I guess it will take a little more searching.

Well, u need to get it done. I got it done at a Tire Discount and it took about 15min and they charged my 40bucks.

well, that surprises me even more. a tire shop did it for you?? d**n, I wish I had one of those tire shops around here. seriously, there's gotta be dozens of "reputable" repair shops in town, and nobody seems to be able to do it, except the GM dealers, of course. I even called a mechanic that I've known for a while, he works at a "ford and chevy only" shop, which is supposed to be quite good, even he didn't have the equipment to do it. I'm getting a little anxious here.

I got mine done last weekend. Found a guy that has the Tech 2 tool. He did it in about 3 minutes and didn't charge me.

I don't think you'll hurt anything by driving it without getting it done, but it WAS recommended even if you don't have an SES light. Mine never lit up, BTW.

im wondering about this whole crank relearn myself!, it seems just as many people havent had it done than have, i read through wait4me's website and it says nothing, i guess when i send him my info i'll just ask him. BTW my buddy who is a certified mechanic didnt think it was nessessary, the same guy who has a crazy fast camaro and has done multiple tunes on it without a relearn, just another opinion i guess.

If you dont have a SES light you do not need a crank relearn. If you do get a new PCM the chances you will need the relearn is about 50% it just depends on where your crank is at when you install the PCM.
