My dad wants to get a layer of clear coat put on my truck this summer. I was wondering if this would be okay (will it peel off after a while, etc.). The truck comes with a clear coat on it already, right? I was also wondering if I can still wax the truck, or if I should wait until after I've gotten the CC applied. Thanks.

It's already clear coated. Would require some prep work, otherwise, yes, the clearcoat will peel. Is there some specific reason for doing this? Sounds like a lot of $$$ and time.

I would be interested in what others think here as well. I was thinking of waxing mine when the weather stops spitting rain/snow. I was on Turtle Wax's website the other day looking at some stuff. I just tried their site since I knew the brand name. They have a product called Ice that looked pretty easy to use. I think I may give it a shot.

Not trying to disagree with dad or anything, but I don't understand why you guys would want to put on a "layer of clear coat.' Modern paints have a prime, base, and clear, right? Clear accents the base, maybe protects it a little. To put clear on clear is not making sense. In my humble opinion, you could probably hire a professional detailer to restore the gloss and beauty of your paint for far less than a coat of clear. Pros can do * amazing! * work on paints that look absolutely dead. Some basic sanding, Meguiars swirl remover plus a Zaino treatment will make that old truck look like it's never looked before. Go to autopia.org and ask around before you do this drastic step that I [ahem] don't think you really want to do. Also, www.showcardetailing.com and Richard Lin have some almost unbelieveable success stories w/ pics. of saving paint.

yeah it already has clearcoat on it that sound be in fine condition for years to come ( if properly detailed and well maintained ) Buy a $100 detailing kit & go all out on your truck for a few days and you will get it loooking like brand new, or like the one guy said have it detailed by a detailer :tear:

Most every vehicle manufacturer started using the two stage paint system (base coat/clear coat) in the 1990's, some in the early 90's. The only reason to re-clear the truck would be if the clear coat is peeling off already?

Like previously stated, if its looking faded or scratched, and the clear is still on, polish it out, it should shine up great!

There are better over the counter products like Liquid Glass, it was outlast Ice by many months in durability

Clear coat is paint. Once you properly prep the truck for paint, put color AND clear on it and it will be done right. If you don't want to do all that, take the good advice of these guys and have it professionally detailed.

You don't just re-clearcoat a vehicle. You don't have a DCX truck, so the clear coat shouldn't be peeling. Have a pro machine buff your paint and/or clay bar it, then polish/wax it. It should look just like new when done.
