Another Question About The Year Of Motor

Hey, so I looked for the vin number today on my motor, and I did find it and searched it, and found out its the original 1988 350 V-8 motor, but when I was looking for the vin number on the motor, I did find the date, and that was E0970-May 9, 1970, but when I searched the vin number, it came up as a 1988 350 V-8 motor. my question is, is whay is the date on the back of the block there for? Is that when the block was made, or what. I'm just confused about that.
