Aluminium Tape

Hi everyone,

My truck are sierra 1500 crew cab 5.3l. I see a big aluminium tape between my fender and airbox. If i remove the airbox i see the tape on the fender air hole. How the airbox can breath if the tape are in the air hole fender for the airbox? It is normal or i need to remove this? thanks

I have never heard of this before. My '02 has two inlets in the fender and in the air box. The top hole is longer and more narrow than the bottom hole but both are open.

Does your truck have two inlets into the box?

I will be watching this post to see if someone has an explanation for this.

Hi,

My uncle have a silverado 02 and he don't have any tape. My airbox are the same model like my uncle. I have two inlets in the fender and in the air box but with tape on the inlets in the fender. It's the same like your description. I think with picture it's more better. I grab my digital camera and put picture to explain that.

This is wierd, I have never seen that before. Maybe something left on from the factory? I would take it off or at least cut out the foil at the holes. It would help the motor breathe alot better. Which I dont see how it is breathing now.

Yeah, that's absolutely not right, remove it. My guess is the previous owner may have had a CAI that was routed somewhere else and he closed off the holes then didn't remove it when he put the stock airbox back in. Maybe he had a ram air or cowled hood on their or something.

I replace everythings but i don't do any ride now. I think if the engine have not enough airflow the computer use more fuel. I make a long ride (highway) yesterday 220 miles with a speed of 55-60 mph and i use 13.5 gal. My gear are 3.42. I have this truck for two weeks now. My previous car was camaro z28 1995 5.7l, this car are now for sale. I live in Quebec. Anyway i'm sure this will be night and day on next ride like Chexmix said.

Did it help? I would think it would be night and day for the changes that were made.

That is the craziest thing I have ever seen. I would have to agree wtih what "Daddy" said. It had to have been put there by the previous owner. I do not see how the poor truck was running.

I'm surprised that the MAF didn't throw a code since it wouldn't have been able to get enough air.

No trouble code, idle ok around 550 rpm, start easy, but i don't try in wot. Anyway no tape anymore. Oh i think this tape are used to protect the air filter for dust  . With the tape the only space between the airbox hole and tape are 1/4 inch.
