Nav Radio Not An Option

Guys I am looking for some insight on this. I have a 2003 Suburban LT with Bose. I purchased a GM Navigation Radio TNR800 GM Part number 15800000 (Non- Lux).

I took it to the dealer to have it swapped and reset to my VIN. I was there all day, well 4 hours before they sent me home with a loaner.

Seems that in 2003 Chevy did not have the option for Navigation Radios. So apparently the computer do node have the VCI Code? The dealer called the GM Tech line for 4 hours to get this code and no one called them back.

So my truck still sits at the dealer for what should ave been a simple VIN Reset. Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone else know where to get this apparently chrgeable VCI code from?

Any help would be appreciated!!!

Thanks

UPDATE

Got a call from the dealer this morning and they tell me they cannot get the Navigation radio to work with my truck because Navigation was not an option at all in the 2003 Chevy's.

COULD THIS BE FOR REAL??? So now I am out $200 for their time and have nothing to show for it.

Can anyone confirm or deny this????

This radio will work in a 2003 Suburban--4 things need to be done--1) Install the antenna--2) Tap into VSS wire (in location A4 of plug that taps into speedometer cluster)--3) Install radio--4) Remove theftlock--Can be done with Tech II tool--Vss wire (vehicle speed sendor) is what keeps the navigation accurate--Also keeps navigation operating when you lose reception (going thru tunnels, etc.)--It calculates your distance by monitoring your rate of speed--The unit will work without the VSS hooked up, but will not be accurate--

So what the Dealer tells me is that because it was not an option in the 2003 Model the radio will not communicate with the rest of the truck systems. It would need a new VCI Code which GM will not provide because they have dropped support of that code.

This is ridiculous!!

If they don't believe it, I'll e-mail pictures of it operating in my 03 Z-71 Suburban---Maybe ask them where they send their factory radios for repair--It may be a local shop that also does repairs and installations and can help you--You can also check if it works without clearing the theftlock--Start the truck and wait until "theftlock engaged" comes on screen--Then turn truck off--Next, turn the key to the "acc" position--Pull out the radio fuse (or unplug the harness from the back of the radio)--Re- install the fuse of plug the harness back in (still with the key in the "acc" position) and the radio will work until you start the truck or turn the key off--Quick question--Did the dealer actually install the radio? My guess is they did but could not check its operation because of the theftlock--They probably don't know how to clear it with a Tech II tool--If that is the case, ask them to try what I described above--And tell them to try it for free--$200.00 for nothing is crazy--Just swapping the radios takes 15 minutes, tops--All that needs to be done is pull off the plastic molding that covers the speedometer and radio (it is just held in by clips--a firm pull and it's off--Then remove 4 screws that hold in the radio and slide the radio out--Unplug the 2 harnesses and that's it--Any serious time would be in installing the antenna--The whole dash has to be removed to install it in the factory location--I have heard of some people wrapping the GPS intenna in bubblewrap and wedging it up against the dash with the radio out--The only other thing is if the GPS unit you purchased is defective--Let me know how you make out and I will assist you anyway I can--

I had to bring the instruction on how to unlock my NAV unit to the dealer ,they did not know how. It can be done, I added the 05 touchsreen and LUX amp to my 03 Tahoe. It works great.

wow, what a pain.... I hope they don't make me go through that when I decide to put mine in. I hate when dealers try to jerk you around.

That VCI stuff is all bullcrap. Just like mikbor1 says, all you need is to get the thing installed, and then clear the theftlock. All that crap about downoading a VCI code from GM is totally unnecessary. If that dealer can't clear a theftlock code, then go to another one. It's a simple thirty-second procedure.

Here's the GM procedure he should follow:

(PRINT THIS OUT AND SHOW IT TO THE TECH!)

Re: GM Document #1275527

Radio Setup With RPO UM8

Radio Theftlock Clear Procedure

Complete the following procedure, using a scan tool, in order to properly set up communication:

Using a connected Tech2,

1. At the Main Menu screen, select: Diagnostics.

2. At the Vehicle Identification screen, select the following options:

? Model Year

? LD Trk, MPV, Incomplete

3. At the System Selection Menu screen, select: Body

4. At the Vehicle Identification screen, select the following:

? Appropriate model

? Appropriate Air Conditioning

? Navigation Radio

5. At the Body Screen, select: Navigation Radio.

6. At the Radio screen, select: Special Functions.

7. At the Special Functions screen, select: VIN Relearn.

8. At the VIN Relearn screen, the scan tool will display "Do you want to clear radio theft information?"

9. To begin clearing, press the soft touch key on the top right of the scan tool. The scan tool will display "Clearing Radio Theft in Progress."

10. Press EXIT on the scan tool and cycle the ignition.

Important:

The radio theft will learn the VIN. Without learning the VIN, the radio will display a locked message (LOC or LOCKED).

I am having somewhat of a same problem. The problem is this. When you put in 2003 as the model year in step 2 above, navigation is not an option to select in step 5. It wasn't an option for 2003, so its not a selectable option in the TechII tool. Anybody know exactlly what to do to get around this?

The dealer did it for my 2004 and nav was not an option on it either. I searched this forum and printed the instructions and gave to them when I took it in. Worked like a champ.

Maybe have them try 04 and maybe the equivalent GMS (Sierra I believe) if Silverado or Suburban aren't available as options on the Tech II. Good luck
