Checking Rear End Fluid Level

I just refilled my 04 Burb rear end with Amsoil and did what I have done for years. I filled it till its at the top of the hole. After reading the manual it says like 5/8 inch below the plug, how important is it to be so exact ?

Not a big deal.............I've changed mine a few times and always go to just below the fill plug..................never had a problem

I heard one guy blew his pinion seal shortly after overfilling. I don't think you'll have any issues but they spec it below the hole for a reason and I'm guessing it's not just to make it a pain in the a$$ to change.

I bought a Mag-HY-Tec aluminum cover for my 2005 Sierra. This differential cover has a dip-stick. If you fill acording to the dip stick the level will be 1/2 inch above the hole.

I called Mag hy tec and they said that after extensive testing that the manufacturers recommended level is too low. They recommend that the lever be higher for a longer lasting rear end. The housing has a vent hole so you will not build up excess pressure.

I have been running this over fill lever for 30,000 miles with no problems.

Thanks and have a great day,

If the mfgs recommended level is too low, then why no problems with UNDER-lubed rear-ends (dunno what it would be...things burning up, wearing very rapidly, etc)? And with the massive number of trucks out there that are filled to the level in the manual, there would be many more problems, I'm sure.

Almost 104k miles on my 1997 with 10 bolt with no problems so far (knock on wood). I've changed the fluid every 30k miles or so using standard dino lube, and I've always filled it until it starts coming out the fill hole.
