Interior Lights

I just purchased a mint 95' K1500 Silverado the other day, and I love the thing. But I have noticed one thing wrong with it. Whenever I open the doors, none of the interior lights come on. The dome light nor the door lights come on. Also, the Cargo light won't turn on either, with the doors open or dome light on. Now the dome light DOES work whenever I switch it on with the dash button, but not when I open the doors. I haven't checked the actual fuses yet, which I plan on doing tomorrow, but I did look in the owner's manual at the fuse layout and I don't think it's a fuse? The CTSY fuse controls the Cargo, Glove box, Dome, and Courtesy lights, as well as the mirrors. Well the Dome light works, the Glove box light works, and the power mirrors work. It's just that the Cargo light doesn't work, and the interior lights don't come on when the door is opened. Sorry for the long post, but I figured I'd ask here before I started checking it out more myself or even taking it somewhere to have it looked at.

You do know there is a override switch at the headlite switch?

You do know there is a override switch at the headlite switch?

Yes I know this lol. After tinkering around with it some more, I've narrowed it down to the actually Headlight switch being the problem. I believe there is a short in the switch because the override button doesn't lock when you push it in unless you push it really fast. When it's out, I can open the passenger door and push on the button that the door pushes in when you close it and it turns the lights on, but it's extremely touchy. I'm going to order a new switch assembly and hopefully that will fix my problem.

I ordered a new switch unit last night so hopefully it will be in sometime this week. I hope the switch is my problem, because if it's not, i'm going to have alot of fun going through the wiring and testing everything

I'll second the door pin swithes, if I may. My '97 Silverado would randomly flash the interior light while driving. I was dreading tracing out the wires, but it turned out to be the door switches. Easy fix.

I don't think it's the door pin switches because when I open the door with the key still in the ignition, the buzzer goes off. If it were the door pins, wouldn't they not work for that?

Ok well I received the new headlight switch in today and I put it in. It still didn't fix my problem, so I know it's not that switch. It HAS to be a problem with the door pin switches I guess, or maybe wiring. I know that the driver's door will not make the interior lights come on at all when open, no matter how many times you push the door switch pin in. But the passenger side door will sometimes turn the interior lights on when open, and you can always push the pin in and they'll come on. However if you barely tap the pin, they'll turn off, or flicker like there's a short. Does anybody have any ideas? Or possibly a part number for new door pin switches, 95' K1500.

The door switch is less than $10 from the dealer, and easy to replace.

How do I get the door switch out? Does the switch pop out of the dash, or do I have to remove some of the dash to actually get in behind the switch?

I've had the same problem. In addition, the lights don't go on when I turn off the ignition. I'd be more concerned if my wife drove the truck more at night. Of course if my wife drove the truck more at any time, I'd have some major concerns!

The door switches are based from ground connections to make the lights work. It's possible that the door switches are not contacting ground or some contaminates are keeping the contacts from connecting. Make sure that both the body and engine have ground straps to the frame.

    • Thanks @newdude, guess I'll keep looking.  Test driving so many trucks that have obvious things broken, I'm thinking "if they couldn't even be bothered to fix the power seat," what else is broken".   Just drove a 2021 where the power seat motor was grinding/binding and wouldn't do anything but make a terrible sound.   An owner that puts dents on the bumper, doesn't fix a seat motor, and had spotty service intervals (along with missing major services) doesn't give me the best of confidence.   Amazed at the number of people that will finance a $60k+ truck, run it into the ground, then trade with a loan balance (every single one had "loan/lien reported" on the CARFAX at the last year of registration).
    • Not true! I have been runing them since 2006 F250! suspension component that works as a sway bar, a traction bar, and a helper spring points directly to the RoadActive Suspension (RAS) kit. Works as a sway bar, a traction bar, and a helper spring.
    • Here's a starter kit:    CC Jensen, a Danish oil testing Concern gives us the following guidelines:   ISO 14/12/10 Very Clean Oil ISO 16/14/11 Clean Oil ISO 17/15/12 Lightly Contaminated ISO 19/17/14 New Oil ISO 22/20/17 Very Contaminated and not suitable for any service.   In addition CC Jensen gives a table showing how engine life is increased by cleaning up the oil. For example cleaning the oil from 19/17/14 to 13/11/8 will extend motor life by a factor of 6X.   But even cleaning it two “Life Extension Classes” will double motor life. So perhaps giving those classes would be useful:   21/19/16 20/18/15 19/17/14 18/16/13 17/15/12 16/14/11 15/13/10 14/12/9 13/11/8   *************************************   https://testoil.com/program-management/setting-iso-cleanliness-targets/   Third paragraph from the bottom will give a starting point.    Your next question should be, okay 10um at what Beta ratio and the answer is in the graph Beta 75.   Then the next question is what is your chosen filters profile? (Purolator PL series below) The red dot is Beta 75. This was the information I obtained from MANN a few years ago. So the best filters, Purolator One, AMSOIL EA, FRAM Ultra, Royal Purple, Bosch Premium should get a doubling engine life over filters like Purolator L, any service filter from any quick lube, WIX, NAPA, STP, Mobil 1, Purolator BOSS.    And as noted by CC Jensen a 2-5 micron @ Beta 200 bypass system has the capability of a six fold improvement. AMSOIL has such a system as does Donaldson.       Now having said all that testing is the touchstone. Test the oil NEW and test it with your chosen filter. Then test over milage. Do the work, get the result. But understand this in NOT absolute BECAUSE this is one factor in isolation.   Example:    A valve spring supplier can state that with cam X and a valve train of Y grams the valves will not float to 7K rpm. is that true if the builder choose a system 20 grams over limit? Common sense must be used and limits understood.
    • This doesn't look like a GM truck. Not needed on a HD truck
    • It varies a ton around me. Some places are still at $5.00 or higher and others are way down into the $4's.   Offroad diesel was $4.02 at the one station I passed today.
