I have a 2002 Silverado with the 4.8 V-8. I was wondering if any of you out there have had the intakes go out on your rigs?? I currently have 67,000 and am wondering what to look for. I work with a gentleman that says he is losing coolant out the exhaust. No coolant in the oil, or no leaks. He says he is going to change intake gaskets. I am going along the lines of head gasket myself. What y'all think?

The intake gasket doesnt have anything to do with the coolant. If hes smelling it in the exhaust i would put my money on head gaskets. I replaced my intake gaskets at about 104,000 miles and it made a difference. They are know to leak on these engines.

CLM 7214 is correct. The intake on these engines is dry. If he has coolant in the exhaust it is head gaskets or heads.

I would also say it has been run hot at some point. To my knowledge, the head gaskets on these engines are rock solid and have no issues that I know of.

Tell him to be sure and check the water pump very closely. I have heard of them leaking small amounts and it is almost impossible to spot because the coolant never hits the ground or leaves a puddle.

That's exactly what I thought. He's still set on the intake, however I believe it is either heads (more than likely) since he tows alot, or water pump. Also, I believe they are copper head gaskets correct?? I looked at mine and seen some coppper sticking out. Thanks for the info. Anybody with any major problems on the 4.8's?? Let me know I am curious. Thanks.
