0w30 Engine Oil Vrs 5w30

Can we run 0W30 in our 5.3 engines ? it should give us more MPG but will it protect the same ?

I think 5w30 full synthetic would give you the reduced friction and protection you want. Especially at higher temps.

I would think that the "zero" would only be a benefit and come into play in the cold climes.

I dont think it will have a change in mpg at all, you arent changing the weight of the oil. Only the viscosity rating.

30 weight oil is 30 weight oil.

 

the 0, 5 10, whatever tells you how it acts in the cold...

ie: Viscosity at ambient temp, pour point etc. It has a little to do with MPG if you just start up and drive away in sub 0 temps I guess.

 

Just use the oil it calls for man. Maybe run pure synthetic, that will help your MPG.

0w-30 uses a thinner base oil, with more viscosity improver to accommodate the higher temps. As we've discussed before, more viscosity improver added to the base oil means less actual LUBRICANT is in the blend.

 

If it's not winter, there's no point in sacrificing lubrication qualities of the oil. I personally would advise staying with 5w-30, or even 10w-30 in mid-summer high heat. Of course, the number of short trips should be a factor in this decision.

 

The only time your thin oil saves fuel consumption is during startup & warm-up periods. Once your operating temperatures are running hot (i.e. mid-summer), your thin oil is likely not doing an equivalent job of lubrication (especially if the oil viscosity is only derived from viscosity improvers), and as a result may actually be hurting highway fuel mileage.

 

Synthetic oils are great, but IMO, one should attempt to stay with an oil designed for the ambient temperature of the present season. Just my opinion.

There is no point in using it, unless you live in the extreme north. Does not matter if you run 0w-30, 5w-30, or 10w-30 once you reach normal operating temps they are all just 30 weight oil. You will NOT get better MPG. The "W" in the oil stands for Winter it lets you know how the oil flows at extream cold temps. Just run a good 5w-30 and your gonna do just fine.

I'm not guessing about a da mn thing! Everything I said is spot on correct and I also said for him to use 5w-30! 5w-30 is what GM says to use!

I use 0W30 Castrol Syntec in mine. You can get it at most Auto Zones. This is a very good oil for the LSX based engines in our trucks.
