New Door Speakers?

Recommended Posts

Hello!

Im new to aftermarket audio and would like some advice on some new speakers. I have a 99 GMC Sierra extended cab with stock sterio. I want to replace the front and rear speakers and keep the stock deck. So what do you recommend ( brands, types, size, and be specific)? I just want to have good sounding speakers at reasonable cost. Thanks in advance!

For the absolute best bang for your buck go with the Pioneer Premier Rev series speakers. Super awesome sound off of deck power for a very nice price. They can be found cheaper on ebay if you know how to search for them.

Just get those 6.5" speakers for your doors and ignore the back speakers, they are a pain to replace and the sound from upgraded 4x6 speakers is not really much of an upgrade in sound quality...replace your stockers up front and just turn the rears off.

I am not well educated in stereo components, and a few years ago bought some expensive speakers for my truck that has a factory radio. There was no bass at all...sounded like an old am radio. I found out my radio wasn't powerful enough to drive the speakers.

Will the speakers you mention above will run off a factory stereo with quality sound ? They look like good speakers.

What values would I look for in a speaker for my 2001 Silverado factory stereo ? nominal watts ? hertz ? ohm ? max watts ?

The rating you should be concerned with is Sensitivity. This tells you how efficient the speaker is.

93.2db speaker will be much louder with the same power vs an 88.9db speaker for example.

Had a full polk speaker system in my OBS '00 Tahoe Z71, very nice setup. They're not too expensive and they sound great with a full range of sound. They even still sounded good when I de-moded the vehicle and put the stock HU back in there.

But if ya do eventually throw in an aftermarket HU (Pioneer, for example) and a sub, you'll have one nice setup.

The main speakers were the db6500.

Check out crutchfield.com to see what'll fit.

Sensitivity is not that big of a deal if you are running small amounts of power. The pioneer rev series will sound fantastic on stock deck power, but truly shine as all speakers do at recommended power.

As far as what specs you need to pay attention too...max watts is a useless spec. It is usually an inflated number to make the speakers appear more impressive to the uninformed buyer. Your most important will be RMS and ohms. 90% of your aftermarket speakers will be 4 ohm, and that is what you are needing. Hertz and the rest are not that important, sensitivity and frequency response can sometimes come into play, but usually only in super high level systems.

It is very cheap and easy to add a small amplifier to your stock system to boost the power. Many amps that do 50 watts x 2 can be had for less then $100 bucks. Not only is there more power but the signal is usually unclipped. Clipped power is very bad.

Looking for HQ sound, but only wanting to replace your stock speakers and keeping the stock head unit? If you're not adding amplifier to your system, I would suggest staying with 2-Way Coaxials. After trying numerous brands, I wasn't happy till I found Rainbow Audio (Model#SL 165, 6.5" Woofer, MSRP $170) Rainbow SL-165 (Input sensitivity=90dB 1W/1m, Frequency response= 50-25kHz)

Hint: Call and ask Aaron for better pricing! They're worth every penny!

The best advice is to go to a car audio shop and demo the speakers. Make sure whatever the source unit is is set to a flat EQ. Sometimes shops will tune the source units a certain way to make some speakers sound better then others because a certain set has a higher profit margin.

Nobody can tell you what the better speakers are because most people have very VERY limited knowledge on what different speakers sound like. Also people have different preferences. That is, some like punchy mid bass while others prefer a smoother natural low end response curve.

So basically whatever sounds good to YOU is what is best for YOU.

I am also replacing the door speakers in my 01 yukon. I have the premium (non-bose, non OnStar) system. Are the speakers driven from the factory head unit or from the amp?
