Has Anybody Else Heard About This?

There has been a lot of discussion about this topic on some of the oil forums. I think I saw a big thread on theoilguy.com. Mobil 1 did change their formula about a year ago. The oil is a dark brown and has a different odor. From what I saw, Mobil 1 hasn't acknowledge any change. I tried Castrol Syntec, Valvoline Synpower, and I think next oil change I will try Amsoil.

I think that the M1 Full Synthetic is still G4 basestock. They did change the basestocks on some of their other oils though.

This is from http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lubes/PDS...obil1_5W-30.asp

"Features and Benefits

Mobil 1 5W-30 is made with a proprietary blend of high performance synthetic basestocks fortified with an advanced additive system. Mobil 1 5W-30 is one of the most recommended viscosity grades for new cars. This oil is uniquely designed to provide unsurpassed levels of performance, cleaning power and engine protection, while meeting the demanding ILSAC GF4 performance standards. "

Amsoil or Royal Purple

Royal Purple and Castrol Syntec have been blends all along. Mobil Oil sued Castrol in Federal court almost 10 years ago because the were only like a 15% synthetic blend but called their product "synthetic" but the court ruled in favor or Castrol and they got to keep advertising that way.

I'm sticking with Mobil, the first synthetic and still the best researched and tested one out there. Mobil One is factory fill for all of these:

# Acura RDX

# Aston Martin

# All Bentley Vehicles

# Cadillac CTS, CTS-V, Escalade, XLR, XLR-V, SRX and STS and STS-V

# Chevrolet Corvette C6 and Z06

# Chevrolet TrailBlazer SS

# Chrysler 300C SRT-8

# Cobalt SS S/C Coupe

# Dodge Caliber SRT-4, Charger SRT-8, and Magnum SRT-8

# Jeep Cherokee SRT-8

# Mercedes-Benz AMG Vehicles

# Mercedes SLR

# Mitsubishi Evolution

# Pontiac Solstice GXP

# All Porsche Vehicles

# Saturn Ion Red Line and Saturn Sky Red Line

# Viper SRT-10

Mobil's webpage on Factory Fill

Now if their engineers trust it, I can

I don't think Royal Purple or Castrol are factory fill in anything. They just do a good job of advertising in the magazines we all read and the shows we watch. Its called target marketing.

I'd stay with Mobil

How do you know if you tried something else and it was better or worse without comprehensive oil analysis?

I didn't say one brand of oil was better or worse. I have used Mobil 1 for many years and no problems. I did notice a change in color and odor of Mobil1 in the last year. I don't know if that change is good or bad. I have read a lot of oil forums and the discussion. I don't know if anyone is right about Mobil 1 changing to group III, but I have read some of the email responses from Mobil 1 and they dodge the question about any change. If the change was for the better, I think they would advertise that. For now, I'm staying away from Mobil 1.

I've been using Mobil 1 exclusively for the last 15 years in every vehicle I have owned. For my next oil change however I am switching to Penzoil Platinum since by all accounts it is equal or superior to M1 but much cheaper. I for one do believe that Mobil changed their formulation and not for the better. Does anyone truly believe that Exxon/Mobil would not take advantage of a court decision if it would increase their bottom line by hundreds of millions of $$$ every year? I have not seen one definitive and unambiguous reply from Mobil as to whether their Mobil 1 is still a "true" synthetic made of Group IV basestock or whether it is now a blend. All of I have read from Mobil are non-answers and BS like they are used by NASCAR teams (oil is probably given to nascar teams free, and in any event is not the same formulation you or I could buy) and how they are factory fill for XXX brand of vehicle. All this tells me is that they had the most attractive contract terms and price when selling to manufacturers. Just my $.02

I am sorry for sounding blunt. I didn't mean to.

When I change from one brand of oil to another something has to drive the decision.

Price, availability, reputation or results.

I have used Mobil 1 and had my oil sample sent off on each new vehicle I use it in, at least two or three so I know how far I can go between changes. Each engine can be different and the driving style can make it different. I had a 99 Taurus and I knew that I could run at least 7000 miles without even causing the oil additives to start degrading. I never tested it past that mileage so I could have went further with no problem. I usually ran that car to between 7000 and 8000 before I changed it. That way I could run all year on only 3 changes. If I had switch oils for some reason, like price I would start that process over to see how far I could go. If I had changed at 4000 anyway, I might as well use only conventional and save about 1/2 on oil cost. Its just hard to tell if one is better over the other when we run them in our vehicles unless we take the word of the oil company who made it, or test it ourself or both.

Advertising is powerful and just because someone splashes their name all over our favorite hotrod magazine or race team doesn't prove anything to me except they spend money on ads.

For the love of God

WHY is it so HARD to spell "Mobil 1" correctly? There is *NO* "E" at the end!

:crackup::flag:

www.mobil1.com

For what it's worth I read about this on bobistheoilguy.com a few months back.

On my 07 Classic I will not be using MobiL 1, or in any other vehicle I have.

The cost is too high. My 04 2500 6.0 leaked from every gasket and seal it had from Mobil 1. So far so good with the 07 classic 6.0 running Castrol.

I've got 3,500 on the clock now. By the time the 04 had that many miles it had already been torn into once to replace the oil pan gasket, rear main, front main and valve covers. By the time it hit 21,000 when I sold it , it had been done twice more.

Never again will I use M1.

Your 07 Classic came from the factory with Mobil Clean 5000

hmmm now i'm all kinda of confused. I am running Mobil 1 5w-30, I might switch back to Royal Purple though.

When i switched from Mobil 1 and Valvoline to Royal Purple in my LS1 i noticed a big difference.

A lot less Engine noise and valvetrain noise

But with my truck switching between oils didnt make that much of a difference.

If your going to be running a High performance engine with higher Compression then your going to want to try different oils to find the one that works the best for you.
