Suburban Tire Wear

My 2005 Suburban is having a front tire wear issue. The inside edge of the tires are wearing excessively. I 1st noticed this the 1st time I changed the oil at about 5000 miles. I've taken it to several dealers who have said that this is normal and I should rotate the tires at every oil change. So this is what I have been doing. After 30000 miles I'm still having this problem. I was able to get GM to give me a free alignment, this would be the 2nd one, and the dealer says it was within specs. I just looked at a used 2004 Suburban on another dealers' lot with 36000 miles and the same tires and they look normal.

 

I would like to hear from anybody that has a Suburban or Yukon XL with 265-70-17 Bridgestone Dueler H/T tires and your experience with them. If you had the same issue, please tell me what you were able to do to correct it. I would like to use the info from this forum and tried to get this resolved.

Take it somewhere other then a dealer for alignment issues.. Look for a local truck shop that services big trucks and fleet trucks for towns , schools and fire departments

My 2003 Silverado did the same thing with the factory tires Bridgestone Deuler At's. What I did was raise tire pressure from 35 to 40 psi front and rear, then rotated tires every 5k miles. It reduced the feathering of the inside of the front tires tremendously. I ended up getting 30k out of the OEM tires before replacement. I was told by a co-worker (former GM tech) that 30k out of a set of OEM tires was not the norm.

and more hwy driving will get you 45k seems when I did more in town driving I had to rotate more. I run 20" road tires all summer and the factory 17" for the winter

One other thing about alignments. Just because they aligned it "in spec" doesn't mean that the tire is perfectly flat (0 camber) to the ground. In a previous car I had the same problems and was told the same thing. Finally (after several sets of tires and alignments) went to a shop and told them I wanted the tires to wear evenly, they told me that the factory specs had the tires with positive camber and to get 0 camber they installed an adjustment "kit". End of problem.

My '02 Yukon XL had 39K on it when I bought it and the Fir Wilderness LEs were cupped pretty bad on the inside. The previous owner swore he had them rotated regularly but they cupped. I ran them for about 10K miles and got sick of listening to the roar and installed a set of Bgstone Dueler H/L Alenzas and it made a new truck out of it. I have about 4K on them now and they are wearing even so far.

Found out today that the tires may be bad after all. GM issued a TSB on them and are replacing them for free. The TPC # on the tires is 1211MS. Check with your dealer if you are having a similar issue.

I have an 04' Hoe with Firestone Winderness LE tires....tell me more about the recall....!!!

 

I have cupping on the inside front as well...is that a defect in the tire or simply lack of rotation...??

 

I have over 50,100 miles on tires....seem fine except for the cupping on inside...

Google led me to this topic after I went in to get a puncture repaired, and was shown the inside tire wear on my front tires. My Suburban has 19k miles on the original Bridgestones.

 

I searched TSBs, and came across 3562A that has " BRIDGESTONE DUELER PRODUCT INFORMATION UPDATE. *TT *SC" as the abstract, but no more detail than that. Can I ask what a TPC number is? I'd like to take that information to the dealer.

Just joined this forum this afternoon because I wanted to find out about this issue. I have a 2006 1500 4WD Yukon XL w/ 265R70-17 Bridgestone Dueler HT tires on it. At 15,000 miles I noticed feathering on the inside edges at my second tire rotation. I took it to the dealer and reported it as an issue, along with other service work that needed to be done (excessive power steering whine) and a bump in the steering whenever a left turn was made. They said that a TSB had reported a defect in the steering arm and they replaced it along with a new power steering pump. When I picked the vehicle up they said that the alignment was OK.

 

Second trip to the dealer at 22,500 (after third tire rotation - every 7500 was my plan) to report tires getting worse and check alignment they reported back nothing wrong with alignment and tires looked OK to them.

 

Third trip @ 26,000 and they said big problem with alignment and my fault for not reporting it earlier, they did align the front end at no charge but this is when I found out the alignment is only covered under warranty for the first 7500 miles and while the tires are now history there was nothing they could do beyond the free alignment. I escalated to GM and they investigsted and reported that they couldn't do anything more, but offered a free oil change, and tire roatation for a 24 month / 24,000 mile period.

 

The key to this whole thing is that they control what gets written in the ticket process and you are not given a copy until it is closed out, when it can no longer be edited. My mistake was not checking the ticket after each visit and insisting on something in writing. I should know better after 25 years of this.

 

I feel like they know there is a problem. They advised that I should rotate every 3,000 miles. I am looking at replacing the tires with Michelin LTX M/S like was on my '95 Yukon 4wd that I drove 2 sets for 160,000 after 40,000 on the original equipment tires. I am interested in finding out more on the TSB, you have to pay to get more than an abstract on the TSB. Either subscribe to the TSB or buy an individual article.

The TPC is the tire performance criteria that is molded into the side of the tire.

I've got an '06 Burb with Dueler HTs in size 265/70-17. They feather edge all the time, but treadwear isn't too bad. They should go 40K before requiring replacement. I'll put Dueler A/T Revos on, most likely.

 

I did take the truck to the dealer at something less than 10K miles. They said all was normal.

Hi--I have a 2001 Suburban 1/2 ton 4-wheel drive with 57K, and originial Firestone Wilderness LE 265/70-16 with even wearing tread, which will probably go to about 80K. I rotate and balance every 20K, and have towed a 7500 lb Airstream about 10K. The secret to my sucessful even tire wear is 40psi, and slow around the corners. Heavy lean, on turns at any speed, will cup the inside of the front tires.--Frank Sub

I too have the same problem. I bought the truck used, but the service records show that my Firestone Wilderness LE's were installed last summer by the dealer. I now plan on taking it to the dealer next week to get their input. I will let you know what they say. From this thread, I think I already know the answer.
