Type Of Oil Used To Get 100 K From Your Truck

Recommended Posts

Just curious if those of you who have managed to get 100 K and beyond on your trucks used a certain type oil or did you use whatever the dealer put in. I have been seeing a lot of posts referencing Mobil 1 but have personally never used it. I have 175 K on my 17 year old Toyota 4x4 and used whatever the local tire and oil shop used. Not sure how to start a poll but would appreciate your thoughts and mileage on what oil you used. Is there any real research stating that one type oil is better than the next?

Thanks,

Rob

In my opinion it is all about insurance. I believe that good quality dino oil changed @ 3000 mile intervals is more than adequate for 95% of the vehicles on the road.

Having said that, I have been using Mobil 1 at 5000 mile changes since the first 5000 miles on my truck. I am at 192,000+ miles now and I burn less than 1/4 quart in 5000 miles. Could I have done that with dino oil...probably. Under extreme conditions either hot or cold, I believe the synthetics provide a little better protection compared to dino. Mine starts a lot easier in real cold with synthetic. Like I said, for me it's all about insurance. I do all my oil changes so it is not that pricey for Mobil 1. I KNOW the Mobil 1 made the ticking a lot quieter.

I've never managed to put 100,000 miles on any vehicle I've owned. Modern technology dinosaur based oils are much improved over oils of just a few years ago. Multi viscosity oils are much better for most applications whereas we used to use low viscosity in the winter and high viscosity in the summer.

If you prefer petroleum based oils, you can probably go for 5,000 miles (instead of 3,000 miles) and then change your oil/filter, depending on the conditions you normally drive.

I firmly believe that the oil industry is behind the 3,000 mile change, anyway....they're making billions a year with that thought implanted in our brains...but, Americans love a conspiracy!

On older vehicles with looser tolerances, then 3,000 miles might still be the norm. I personally think it's a waste of a very finite resource, and it fills landfills with nasty leaking oil filters.

Watch the DIC on modern vehicles and you'll probably see closer to 5,000 miles is the "suggested" change, depending on the conditions you normally drive.

I prefer synthetic oils/filters myself. I use MOBIL 1 in my Z16 and CASTROL SYNTEC in my Trailblazer. Both get changed at approx. 5,000-6,500 miles. As soon as my new Silverado hits about 3,000 miles, it'll get synthetic oil/filter as well.

Gentlemen,

This is silly. there is no oil that will not go 200 k in a well designed engine. I managed a large fleet of heavy duty trailer towing trucks in 115 degree Phoenix, Az in the '90 s. Engines were damaged by radiator hose failures period. Never an oil failure with dino oils with 6k oil change routine. Chevy 350s. Engines perfectly factory clean at re ring, bearings perfect but rings stuck due to overheat because of hose failure.

I love all you guys that use mobil 1, I own exxonmobil (xom) stock but all quality oils are great.

There are poorly designed motors out there, chrysler 2.7 comes to mind, but engine life depends more on design than oils.

If it makes you feel better to use synthetic, it won't hurt, but do not skimp on cooling system maintenance.

I've used Castrol 5W-30 dino oil in my '03 that has over 130K miles now. I change it with about 10% oil life left on the OLM, which ususally works out to about 6K miles each time. Almost all the major brand oils out there will get the job done, dino or synthetic. The thing that spooks me are the manufacturers like Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes that spec 15K mile service intervals. Man that seems like a long time to leave the oil in.

Rob, I would have to agree with Ken. A good quality Dino oil would serve you well, however I do use syn because I do feel it is better in extreme conditions such as towing, which I do.

To ansswer your question. You could use the used Mobil that Bish drains from his truck in your truck and never see an oil related issue in 100K miles. I see your Toyota info but I am not sure what your other truck is. If it is a 4.8, 5.3 or 6.0, you have one of the best V8 engines every built and 100K on it is just getting broken in good.

Change it frequently and any oil will do the job of making the engine last a long time. And ditto on the cooling system advice.

I'm willing to sell it REALLY cheap

5K is more the limit for the Mobil 1 or K&N filters I use and not the oil. I do oil analysis on every oil change and 5K is about the max for particulates. I could probably change the filter and get another 5K out of the oil but that's just too messy for me.

165k miles. I use synthetic oil (various brands--using Pennzoil Platinum now) and change it when my truck tells me to.

Straight up Mobil 5w 30 everytime the "Change engine oil" message comes up and 110,000 on the clock with absolutely no engine issues to speak of. The tranny will go before the motor.

I have used Castrol conventional in every vehicle I have ever had, and all have lasted over 130,000. However I did notice some sludge build up in the wifes vehicle when I did a cylinder head replace at 145,000. This may be due to her not telling me she needed an oil change until it was over by 1,000 miles about a dozen times.
