5.7l Info

I am looking into several older models with the 5.7 L. One is a 98 3 door tahoe 4x4, a 92 1500 2wd, and a suburban 1500. I would also appreciate opinions on good prices for these vehicles, and problems I might come across if I get one. Thanks in advance.

go for the z71!!!! but thats just my .02, and the only problem you'll run into is worse gas millage over the new 5.3's mom had a 99 burb before she traded it and it was a little worse on gas millage that her new one is!!

how many miles are on the vehicles? that plays a factor in the pricing of them (at least to me it does)

My 95 Yukon went 205,000 without a major issue other than routiune maintenance. It never leaked a drop of fluid, didn't smoke (not even at startup) and ran like a top till I sold it to get a '06 Yukon XL. I can only hope that this new one is as good to me as the last. I don't know what you plan to use the truck for but the difference between a PU & SUV is significant. I pull a utility trailer for hauling things like four wheelers and small tractors and that gets me past the no bed limitation of the SUV, and the SUV gives lots of room for tavelling with family and friends in awesome comfort. Nothing like a road trip in a land yacht!!! My '95 was in excellent condition inside and out, was bright and shiney, and only brought $ 6,800 in the Memphis area. Good luck and I hope your next GM is as good to you as mine was to me.

I don't plan to use what ever I get for much more than basic transportation. I will occasionally pull a utility trailer to move mowing equipment to cut my grandparents grass, but that would only be two or three times a month, and maybe a horse trailer once a year. I would only be going about a mile with both of them, so it wouldn't pay to buy a HD truck for that. I'm just looking for something that rides high, gets decent not great gas mileage, and is reliable, and the GMT 400 fits that from what I've heard.

her 99 used to get like 12-13 mpg city and about 16-17 highway,from what i can remember if you go with the pickup it'll be a bit lighter so you'll probably see a little bit better gas millage!

My 2002 Suburban gets 13-14 city and 16-17 highway with the 5.7

The 5.7L is a VERY reliable motor with lots of low end grunt. Much more than enough for what you're planning to use it for.

 

As for gas mileage, the worst I've ever got was 14 mpg, best was 17. I'm averaging about 16mpg now with mostly 65mph+ highway driving and a heavy foot.

Another question, how does the 5.7 compare to the 5.3, and do you recommend I go with a newer body style to get the 5.3?

basically what everybody else said, the 5.7 is damm good. It will drink more gas though.

 

The 5.3 gets better mpg but runs at a little higher RPMS to make the same kind of power.

If you can talk 'em down at least a grand or 2 on the 2-Door Tahoe, that'd be the best of your poll choices - those 2 doors are nice. The 5.7 is also a good engine, the 5.3 is just better. Awhile ago I actually "compared" my awesome running '00 Z71 Tahoe (5.7) against my friends new '05 Silverado, quad cab, Z71 (5.3), from a 30 roll just to see how it'd go - The 5.7 got a jump on the 5.3 thanks to it's low-end torque, but after that, the 5.3 just walked away. And the 5.7 already had a tune/exhaust while the 5.3 was bone stock.

 

I did like my GMT-400 tahoe with it's 5.7l V8 - but if it's in your budget, I'd go with a GMT-800 over the GMT400 series any day.

I currently own a 1995 tahoe 5.7 tbi 4 door 4X4 3inch body lift 33inch tires Changed everything you can think of on it but the motor 170000 miles has single to duel series 40 flowmaster runs like a Champ 8-10 MPG wouldnt give it up for anything blue book is 4500 bought it for 10,000$ 7 years ago
