Interior Light Problem

Hi! Great Forum!

 

I have a 1998 Silverado 1500. I have recently been having a problem with the interior lights. When I get in the truck, the lights come on. When I start the truck, the lights go off after short delay. With truck running, open door and lights come on. Shut door, lights go off. Manually turn knob for lights, they come on normally, then back off when knob is returned to original position. Turn truck off and get out, lights stay on.

 

I have pulled the fuse and then replaced it. I have also disconnected battery for several minutes and then reconnected. Problem still a problem.

 

I can only think that this may have started after I jump started another vehicle a few days ago. Other than that, no abnormal occurances.

You need new door jamb switches. Start be replacing the driver door switch (black switch mounted on side of dash..near door jamb). Usually, the driver door jamb switch wears out 1st.

 

These door jamb switches have contacts inside them...they wear with age. These contacts control your interior lights.

If the lights come on and off like they should when the engine is running while opening and closing the door, do you think the switch is still bad? I have tried both driver and passenger doors and as long as the engine is on, when I open and close the doors, the lights work properly. I have done this multiple times on each side. Also, when shutting off engine to exit the vehicle the lights come right on as expected. They just wont go off like they should.

If you push the dome override button do they come on when the truck is off? I've noticed with my truck that when I use the remote the lights will still come on even with the override engaged, so maybe it has something to do with that....
