Leaky Transfer Case...

The transfter case on my truck ('03 GMC Serra 2500HD 4x4) is leaking a little bit of red fluid (about 1 "drip" per hour). I only noticed it a few days ago, after taking it in for an oil (engine) change. Does anyone know how to fix this problem, I checked all the bolts- they were all tight, and I can't seem to figure out exactly where it's coming from. Anyone else have this problem/have a solution?

Maybe the tail seal on the transmission is leaking going all over the transfer case. Making it hard to find a leak on the transfer case. I thought the transfer case fluid was blue for those years any how, maybe just the 1/2 tons. What about the vent tubes, are they dry? Basically only 6 plausible leak locations, input seal, pinion seals, drain plug, fill plug, vent tube. Unless your case has a hole in it. Seen one here before.

The fluid is defiitely red, if someone could tell me for sure if the transfer case fluid is blue, then it is probably the trans leaking somewhere, though it looks as if it is coming off of the transfer case near the 4WD actuator.

I went under the truck to check the tightness of all the bolts on the case. A large nut facing towards the passenger side right near the 4WD actuator was kind of "loose" not loose like I could take it off with my fingers, but loose enough I could tighten it down another 3/4 of a turn to tighten it up- could this be the cause of the leaky fluid? Is the case under pressure?

Sounds like it could be the reverse servo cover. They have been known to develope a very slow leak. Give that a look. That might or might not be it but give it a look just in case. Good luck.

I believe the leak is coming from the bottom of the seal where the black 4WD actuator (black plastic cover about 4" long and square at the end where it connects to the case) is. What's the best way to fix this problem?

Kind of hard to explain. Sort of a dome looking cover. I'll see if I can find a picture of its location.

It is leaking from where the black cover on the bottom passenger side of the transfer case, seeping out very slowly, ans is "dripping" from teh very bottom of there he black actuator is attached to the transfer case. Anyone know how much it will cost to egt a new seal put in in this location? I tried tightening the bolts, they all seemed tight to me.

I should be okay to drive it for another 2 weeks or so, until I have it taken into GMC for the leak to be repaired, right?

It should be fine as long as you keep it filled up with fluid. It is red ATF fluid in there. Only the auto 4x4 tcases have the blue.

 

Mine stays wet due to a bad tail seal at the transmission, but it doesn't drip. There is another known issue called the pump rub failure where a clip in the tcase breaks and a pump begins to move and wears a hole in the housing. Normally it is a smaller hole towards the slip yoke for the d-shaft. It doesn't sound like thats where your leak is, so hopefully you don't have that problem because it's expensive to fix.

I tried to find a good picture of it but could not, sorry. Is it a real bad leak? Does it leave a big puddle over night?

It's not a bad leak- it only has a few drips on the driveway over about 2 days (until I noticed it), but I do want to get it taken care of- I have an appointment for next Monday AM at the GM dealer.
