Nitrous Newbie...

I've been considering installing a Nirous system in my new 2007 VMAX. Since I have no experience with Nitrous in this application, I was wondering if there's a list of pro's or con's in installing/using this moderatly with my truck.

There's a few products such as Nitrous Express which specifically operate with EFI and throttle by wire applications (as in my truck).

I would appreciate anyones comments.

I just read an article in Truckin' magazine where they added nitrous to a SSR along with a set of headers. It provided pics of the install . That might help ?

Very simple. Get a wet kit, all in all they are safer. Dry kits are cheaper but not as safe. Its much better to have a dedicated fuel supply for the nitrous then to depend on other meathods. NItrous express does make some very nice kits. Your engine is safe for a 150 shot with the right plugs and stock tune. Thats about its limits though. Even at 150 you should consider pulling some timing.

You will find much more information on this over on the Silveradoss boards......

Yeah, I've been doing up some reading. I might be leaning to the "ZEX" truck kit, but I'm still researching at the moment. Althought I like the benefits, I just want to make sure I dont kill my engine.

Thanks for your replies.

Do a youtube or google video search for nitrous explosion or nitrous backfire. It should tell you all you need to know about running nitrous in a streat vehicle.

Nothing is ever free. If you elect for cheap performance you're paying for it in added risk.

Just get a turbo and you'll get more power than you ever wanted, and it's a little bit safer especially on a new engine.

I think I'd go with the roots-type supercharger over a turbocharger application if only for the fact that it's used in OEM applications and has seen extensive testing on the engines by GM.

Now... if somebody has a cool 60grand they want to give me I would have no problem turning my ride over to Lingenfelter and getting the 700HP twin turbo makeover... http://www.lingenfelter.com/pack_suv_427h2.htm

Thats rediculous. Of course there are risks of nitrous, but there are risks of any type of forced induction, most problems cause by running the engine to lean. Nitrous is perfectly safe if the vehicle is set up right. Dont be affraid of myths and bad information. Like i said, check out the silverado SS board, there are tons of people that run nitrous over there.

Looks like the hiatus is over. Nothing lasts forever I guess.

No one said power-adders were completely safe they just said, in their opinions, that they were "little bit safer" than Nitrous and that some applications may be safer than others due to more extensive testing of similar configurations by GM engineers.

With a modern EFI engine the only way you're going to get a lean conditions with a 5-6psi boost is if you're stupid (you decide not to flash the computer with the tune that comes with the kit, you decide not to upsize the injectors if yours were the wrong size, you decide not to upgrade the fuel pump). Compare that to nitrous which is guarenteed to to give you an extremely lean condition. On top of that the only thing preventing you from blowing the intake off your engine or cracking a piston is faith that the shutoff switches and solinoids work when they're supposed to.

Now... nitrous systems are also the next on the chopping block for getting banned as well (its a $2000 fine and ticket in canada now) due to its risks for rescue workers. That NOS sticker on your window is a giant warning to firemen to stay the hell away from your car.

I'm certanly intrested in a supercharger package, howerver it appears that the wait is still out on the "Y" motors for the Magnuson Radix. I've been conversing with tbryne here and he's indicating that there might be a release for the 6.0L's comming in Sept.

As far as turbo's, I could not find a manufacturer which produces products for my series either.

If you have any suggesions, please dont hesitate to quote a few manufacturers and I'll dig into them.

As for the Nitro, the Zex kit looks nice and easy to install, but putting myself in a position where I *might* blow the lid off of my intake system without any sort of additional warrenty is perhaps, not in my best intrest at the moment.

That being said, again I have no experience with Nitrous, so it's possible it is reliable providing you do things right (glass half full).

Well it kind of depends on what you want. Superchargers help off the line, turbos (typically) work better at higher RPMs. Turbocharger systems are normally more expensive because there is a lot more work involved (as well as the manufacturing of a turbo is a bit more complex given the materials required to stand up to the heat), which also makes them less widely adopted and harder to find.

Its up to you but my personal preference would be to enjoy the new truck and wait for the kits to come out. If you're really eager for a bit more, maybe a tune.
