Allison Magnet Was Missing

Had the EZ Lube guy throw my filter on while he changed the engine oil and he came out of the pit with both filters in hand and no magnet. It wasn't stuck on the trans so it appears that the last guy screwed up. It's been 40k miles with no magnet. I'm going to the local Alli dealer to get one tomorrow morning. I figure that new magnet will work pretty much immediately so whatever is in there will be sucked up and I figure that i'll run the new filter for a week and replace it again.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Well,

So far, so good. Magnet is back on and the magic smoke has not come out yet so I guess i'm good.

The Allison dealer wants $2.07 for it, couldn't fine one open on Saturday with the part in stock so I ended up going to a local stealer and paying $15.13. The GM dealerships ranged from $15.13 to 47 bucks. $47 for a magnet, I told them that they were insane.

Get your filters at the Ally dealer also, about 7 bucks and change here at mine. I also got a second magnet, and be very pickey about what idiot touches your truck. I think you'll be fine, though this time.

That and the Transynd fluid is a lot cheaper.

I would've went back to the Allison dealer but just didn't have time this week to mess with it. The local Allison dealer is Freightliner so they always get confused when they look for my rig and only see the truck.

I gotta ask. What type of magnet are you talking about. Does the spin on trans filter have a magnet on the outside of it or something?

I have seen the high strength magnets that stick to an oil filter but was not aware that Ali had one on them from the factory.

Just curious?

What part numbers do you use for the two Allison transmission filters when you purchase them from an Allison dealer/distributor? Will they know the correct filter by the GM part numbers? Thanks

Allison has one filter for all of their transmissions. The Allison magnet is a disk that sits on top of the filter in the flow. Most trannies have a magnet in the pan that collects all of the junk but you have to drop the pan to get to it. At least Allison made everything external and easy.

This is the cheat sheet that I found somewhere on this forum:

"

If you visit the Allison website, you should be able to locate a dealer. BTW, the pan gasket is reusable and should not need replacing unless damaged:

ALLISON PART #’S

ALLISON SPIN ON FILTER new part # 29539579 ................old part # 29537268

SHALLOW PAN SUCTION FILTER new part # 29537965 ............old part # 29537514

DEEP PAN SUCTION FILTER new part # 29537966 ...............old part # 29536891 @ $19.10

DEEP PAN part # 29536522 @ $43.98

PAN GASKET part # 29536526

filter ring magnet, 29535617 $2.07

STOCK SHALLOW PAN CAPACITY 7.4 QTS (ALL YOU CAN DRAIN)

LARGE PAN CAPACITY 7.4 QTS + 3.2 QTS = 10.6 QTS

TOTAL CAPACITY (DRY SYSTEM) W/SHALLOW STOCK PAN 12.7 QTS

TOTAL CAPACITY (DRY SYSTEM) W/DEEP PAN 15.9 QTS

TORQUE PAN BOLTS = 20 ft lbs

TORQUE DRAIN PLUG = 25 ft lbs

Thanks lord-dogbert!

The GM part numbers are the same as the Allison part numbers. That makes it easy.
