2008 3500hd Engine

Browsing -> here <- I noticed the standard engines for the 3500HD vary between the SRW and DRW versions. Both are 6.0L but the the HP ratings vary. The SRW 6.0L is rated at 353HP, and the dually 6.0L is rated at 312HP.

 

I gotta question why anyone would sell a 3500HD with a scream-up-the-hills-at-5,000RPM small block V8 in any case, but why would GM put lower HP into a dually than an SRW?

Im just guessing that they detuned it because people with the dually will probably tow more than people with the srw, and they dont want you to hurt the tranny? I think it might be related to why they detune the D-max when they put it in the Kodiaks.

Like I said Im just guessing so I could be wrong.

Ryan, I understand you were just guessing, but from the way you said what you said, it makes it sound like GM wants you to pull more with the SRW than the DRW. Could you clarify what you mean?

 

And since we're talking about the 6.0 anyway, can anyone tell me what it is in cubes?

Maybe GM is trying to go Duramax only in the Dually, and eliminate the 6.0 in the 1 tons? 98 percent of 1 tons around me are duallys, and you have to hunt hell to find a 3500 SRW, and my father was unlucky when in search for his sierra and ended up with a 2500HD D/A CCSB.

If i'm not mistaken the torque ratings for the dually are higher than the single.

 

The torque rating for both 6.0L engines is the same: 373 @ 4400RPM.

You can get all the different engine applications at http://www.gm.com/explore/technology/gmpow...rtec_engine.jsp As for a SRW 1T I don't see much use for one since you only gain a few hundred lbs of GVWR over a 3/4T. The DRW have a much higher rating. This could also explain why you don't find many of them on the lots. There are only two ordering codes the L76 and the LY6 the first is the alum block MAX while the LY6 is the iron block for the HD applications. There are several different HP ratings but the torque appears to be the same. I went back and loaded both sets of curves - the only difference is the RPM - the de tuned versions are simply cut off at a lower RPM.

Sorry it was confusing but what I really ment was... well I guess that doesnt make a whole lot of sense now does it. :shakehead: Anyway thanks for pointing that out.

The reason the DRW version is detuned is because they expect that you would actually be towing a majority of the time, and if you are climbing hills a lot the engine will not hold up long enough if it revs that high. So, they detune it to cut fuel and shift sooner in order to make sure it will last a long time.

After all, if you are climbing the Rockies with a 12,000 lb trailer you would probabl be at redline, full throttle, for a half hour or more. If it had to do that all day, every day, reving to 6,000 rpm, how long do you think it'd last?
