Problem With Oem Tires (17" General Ameritrac)

Ok, first. i know these tires are junk. But, with that in mind. we shouldn't be forced to buy new tires right away.

I just got back from my dealership, and had a talk with them about the tires on my truck, less then 3,000 miles on them and over 1/3 of the treads on all tires have either deep gouges in them, or nice sized chunks missing on the corners.

The service manager first tried telling me, that it was normal for tires to do that when they are driven on gravel. (i don't drive on gravel, either dirt for my driveway, or normal road). I kept talking with him about the tires, and explaining where and what i drive on, along with stressing the low milage on the truck. Finally he called a few other 'friends at dealerships' to ask them, each of them told him that they have had 2 or 3 people come in, the past week or two with the same thing. so he placed a call into GM about the tires, but told me it may be a few weeks before he gets a response.

Has anyone else noticed this issue with their tires? if you have, did you take it to the dealership? and what did they do about it? within the next 2 to 3k miles i will have to replace these tires for certain. but it would be nice, considering that it seems to be a semi-regular complaint. that either the dealership, or GM would do something about it.

another odd thing he mentioned to me, was that they are having to rotate the OEM tires on all the trucks they service at around 3,500 miles to keep them from getting to odd of a wear pattern. most other tires i have delt with, are rotated at about 6,000 to 10,000 without an issue of wear with the right alignment and such.

You're supposed to rotate tires at 3000miles. 6000-10000 is asking for trouble. However the consensus is that these tires are just really bad regardless.

The problem is that while the tire may have met GM's specifications due to the pressure put on the tire company they may be providing a lower quality tire than they originally did to GM while they were testing (just like how you get a different quality tires, oil, etc when you buy from walmart).

GM stock tires have been really hit or miss. Anybody remember the Firestone tires they used for several years? (good for like 100k.... but slicker than snot). I ended up with bridgestone dueler a/t (e-rated) that are almost worn out in my opinion, still have plenty to go before they are truely worn out, but they're getting slippery. I'm at 40k. But they've been what I'd consider a really good tire.

hmm, guess i am accustomed to low profile tires on cars ... all the ones i bought had a 6k rotation time not 3k ...

yes the tires are extremly bad... wont even mention the lack of traction in wet weather ... these tires would suprise me if they hold up past 15 to 20k miles with the amount of rubber that is falling off of them each day ...

hmm i missed that thread, thanks for pointing it out ... looks like i just may be heading back to the dealership before friday ...

yeah keep an eye on them for sure ... i just got off the phone with my dealership .. only thing they will do is replace the tires with the same brand of tire that is on there now ... which i do not want ... it is like 599 for a new set .. so i think i am going to contact general directly about it to find out about a credit or something for the junk tires.

I myself had to have them replaced under 2000 miles. the dealer told me that it was "normal" or that they could not duplicate the problem. I called GM home office and they told me they go by what the dealer says, and that if my dealer said they are fine then they are fine. They went as far to tell me that if i was still not happy to take it to the B.B. B. My dealer also tried to hand me the line that the rep would not see me b/c i bought the truck used. 89 miles is not that used to me. They even tried to deny me on the basis that i bought a chevy at a GMC dealer. Finally the way i got it resolved was to call general themselves and they gave me credit on the tires and i upgraded 5 tires (spare too) to LTX M/S for $400. So if you don't get anywhere with GM call general. It worked for me. Good Luck :)

i think that is what i need to do ... my dealership is cooperating to an extent ... but all they are willing to replace the tires on the truck with .. is more general ameritracs ... which i want to avoid if at all possible ...

I had General Ameritrac's and they nearly got me killed. I did a 360 on a busy 2 lane road in the rain. Never again.

that i would beleive ... when we finally got some rain around here, i ended up parking the truck till it was over ... even from a dead standstil i couldn't get traction for s**t .. even letting it idle from a stop sign it would just sit there and spin the tire some and slowly move forward ... and brakes? forget about them ...

Sounds like the OEM Bridgestone dueler h/t's that GM is bolting on some 2007's. The Dueler h/t suck even on dry pavement. They hydro plane on puddles, and lack even basic traction on wet roads to say nothing about the lack of stability. The worst part is GM is bolting these tires both on mini vans AND full size 4 wheel drive trucks. The Bridgestone rep's I spoke with didn't advice their use off-pavement.

Save yourself the hassle and time dealing with your dealer and GM about OEM tires... I got nowhere, its easier and safer to quit waiting and just go get yourself some proper tires for your full size truck. I suggest Toyo Open Country AT's, Nitto Terra Grappler AT's, and BFG TA KO's in LT metric and upsized to 285/70R17/D.

i am just replacing mine ... cant decide between going ahead and upsizing the rims a bit or just getting tires for now and getting new wheels and tires in a year or two ...

those are the ones that most of the tire shops around me keep directing me to when i inquire about tires ... seems to have 'fair' reviews from what i have found but still not sure .. 599 for a set of 4 installed ...

    • More is cylinder deactivation. Kia-Hyundai Ive had 4. The warranty is the same 10 years 100K miles. My grandson drives the first one 05 Elantra GT. My wife drives the second one 2011 Genesis. The Genesis still performs as new and looks great. The Elantra looks rough. He’s not kind to it. The third was a Genesis coup. The fourth was a Santa Fe. Those were my daily drivers. I don’t keep them long. Kia is the same as Hyundai with the same warranty. I looked at the K-4 today. Too small, otherwise pretty good buy. Most of Hyundai and Kia’s have a performance upgrade.
    • Thanks for the point of reference
    • Great question. Answer....depends. One the volume of the crankcase, the driver that will actually be using the vehicle and the amount it uses plus the distance expected for that next trip. Couple of for instances:   Wife is going to drive Dizzy to Moline and back plus a bit around town so say 500 miles on the day. I know from years with that SUV that around town and local rural it uses about a quart in 1250 miles. But on the Interstate and her at the wheel without her anchor nagging her she'll push it and it will drop a quart in about 800 miles. Hence, around town I wait to somewhere between a quarter down to a quart down. On her trip I'd top it if it was down a few ounces and hope for the best.    Have I overfilled one? You mean by adding before it needs a full quart I assume. No, not once after finding the true fill mark.  I know the dipsticks of everything I drive and add what it needs. I learn this by doing the first oil change a quart low. Run the motor for a few minutes. Let it sit over night. Check and mark. Then add half a cup at a time making note of the place on the stick. I add through the dipstick tube with a barbeque basting bottle. Give it a few minutes to drain down and check again.    A vehicle like Dizzy that uses this much oil will take a few quarts between 3K changes. I keep one in the vehicle with the bottle and a bag. (Mindful of it's fullness) Not a big deal and never makes a mess of it. There is no such thing as "multiple quarts' in my shop for any specific oil. There will be a maximum however of the number of different oils used over the fleet.     Dizzy holds a nominal 5 quarts. So the first fill was indeed over as it actually took 4.75. My vehicles are fit with Valvomax valves so I can meter an ounce on the drain if need be. Found her mark first crack at it. Never to be repeated.    Pepper uses none between changes so I don't keep a quart in that one. Straight up 6 quarts put her dead on the full line. Check it ever fuel stop. They will surprise you when they start using.    Raven holds 3 liters or 5.44 ounces over three quarts. I add 3 quarts and 6 ounces. That gives me 5 oil changes on my orphan quart.    Lawnmower holds about 3/5 of a quart. I don't over fill it to prevent an orphan. So yea, depends.
    • 185k on original 6.2L engine and 10 speed. 6" lift with 35" tires. Changed oil (Mobil 1 synthetic) when truck told me to. Original tranny with original fluid and no service or flush done. All highway miles. A/C compressor replaced at 155k. Oil cooler line replaced at 180k. Still daily driver. Love this truck.   This is my 3rd 6.2L vehicle (2008 Yukon Denali / 2018 Cadillac Escalade) with over 150k miles and no issues. Denali had broken motor mount at 100k.
