Technical Question - Swapping 6 Disc Changer Unit

I have a 2005 Tahoe with a 6 disc changer that has gone south on me. The radio works, but the changer is kaput, it won't do anything.

My neighbor has a 6 disc changer radio from another truck that he is willing to sell me for $90, and it's brand new. The problem is that it comes up with the calibration error and then seems to try to play, but no sound comes out of the speakers, at all. Is this what it is supposed to do when the error comes up? Also, my wife said that on her way to work this morning, the new radio doesn't have any lights in the buttons, is this also because the calibration error?

Now, for my technical question. Has anyone ever taken the actual 6 disc changer part out of a radio and swapped it with a working unit? When I asked the dealer about getting it repaired, he told me that they send the changer out for repair and that I'd still have the radio to use while it's out, but he didn't say if they would send the entire unit and give me a loaner radio or what, and I didn't think to ask until I had left. I opened my radio up by taking the screw off the back and sliding the cover off the top, and it looks possible to remove the changer, but I didn't look closely to see how hard it would be, and then I reistalled the radio. I was in there looking to see if the previous owner of the Tahoe had gotten a CD stuck in it or a paper label fell off, and it looks pretty simple inside.

I figure that if I can get the changer units out, I can swap them, and then I wouldn't have to worry about getting it programmed for my truck. I just hate to think that I'd spend $50-100 to get the new radio setup for our Tahoe and then it not work like it's supposed to.

Thanks,

Scott
