New Dextron Gm Vi Tranny Fluid

Yeah I had my 2006 Silverado's transmission flushed and got rid of whatever crap they had at the factory (factory fill) and had Dextron VI put in, the only difference is that I can see/feel is smoother shifting, and quieter operation, but as for better MPG and longer life, cannot say because I had mine flushed out @ 15,000 miles and I got close to 21,000 miles now. The beauty was I got my dealer to do this work for $75.00 instead of $115.00 since I have them do practically every little maintenance item that I want and they are pretty competitive with local shops around here on prices(Austin Texas). just my 2 cents...

GMs new tranny fluid is all the talk, longer life, better MPG,more HP, and much more so they say.

Anyone switch over to this fluid (Dextron VI)

Would the new version be what came in my 07 Sierra? GMT900

From my buddy working @ a GM facility, all GMT 900 Series Trucks should have come with it, unless the factory still had some of the old stuff and finished that before switching, may want to talk with your service manager to see whats really in your transmission.......

I heard that if you dont change your transmission fluid regularly and then change it with say 50 thousand miles on it then it can gunk up your tranny. This guy at a truck shops opening was telling me that(guy that worked for the company that put out the fluid) but i wasent sure if he thought i was a sucker that would jump on getting my tranny fluid changed or if i was really a dumbass going haha this guy thinks im that stupid! when I really could be that stupid. So with my truck coming up on 45000 miles on it i was wondering if i should get it changed or what...Any help would be appreciated!

Its up to you if you want to get that stuff changed out, some dealerships charge well over $175.00 to completely flush out the transmission and put in new fluid in, since you got 45000 miles, I'd say for someone to drop the pan to look at your fluid and see if you gotta change it, If it was my truck I would definitely change it, heck I changed mine @ 15,000 miles and already I feel the difference, and I just passed 21,000 miles! I baby my truck and don't pull anything except my backside and a friend (Once in a while a couch or heavy desk). I take my truck back to the dealership that I bought it from cause of price and I know if they screw something up, all I gotta do is call up the District Service Manager (if the local service manger does not want to play ball) and demand that I get a new transmission. I have seen but dealerships (GM and independent) change it wrong (not flush it out entirely or not filling it back up to the proper level) and causing premature failure resulting in a replacement being installed, but GM Dealership does it faster (probably cause they got the coporate guys fire breathin down their necks). Just a thought based on what I have seen :)

15,000 and you don't pull anything? I know you like to baby your truck but that's just a waste, IMHO. Heck I'll probably go 50-60,000 before even considering it. To each his own.

This is an old wives tale. I have heard all kinds of stories about changing it and not chaning it. You need to change the fluid and more importantly the filter at regular intervals. I am not a fan of "flush Machines" unless the tech drops the pan and changes the filter. Do not fall for the lie that the filter can be flushed out Most are made of a paper media similar to an oil filter and it cannot be flushed. For those who tow a lot, 30K miles for others 50K to 75K is really good enough.

If I am not mistaken, GM actually began using Dex VI some time in 06 so I would be comfortable in saying that all 07's have Dex VI.

Yep, from my experiences, when I drove other cars (ALL GM) and I changed the fluid in the transmission, it would look like a gunky substance (dont know if the old fluid sucked that bad or what) by the time I changed it around 50,000 miles. When I had my truck fluid changed, it flowed out like used motor oil, and didn't look that bad, but I can say that after the change, that sucker ain't shifting as hard and it is quieter, yeah the dealership said the usual (Better Gas Mileage, Longer Life, yada yada - heck if I wanted better gas mileage and longer life, I woulda bought a used and abused toyota). This being my first brand new (right off the dealer lot new) purchase, I dont want to be rebuilding the transmission @ 50,000 miles, my dad said the same thing until his 2001 Cavalier's transmission went out (never really changed the oil there) and now he is catching rides to work in my truck :)

Correct,Some Cadillac's started using it in '06,All others in '07.

I had mine changed over about 3 months ago. Had them do the works on it. Drop the pan (actually had them bring me the pan for inspection first ), clean the pan and magnet, new filter and gasket, and a full 16 quarts in. I don't have a trans temp gauge, so I couldn't tell you if it helps with the temps or not (it should have though). But I have noticed it seems to shift a little firmer. For which I don't mind. IMO, all that soft shifting stuff will shorten the life of your tranny quicker than not changing the fluid at all.

So wait, if I understand you correctly, I WANT my transmission shifting harder (firmer)? After my dealership dropped the pan, cleaned it out and put it back on and refilled with new Dextron VI fluid, it has been shifting smooth as butter (not the jerky, hard shifts), I thought that with it shifting hard would cause the gears to clash (more specifically the teeth) causing more internal damage than if they had enough lubrication to reduce this clashing and hard (firm) shifts. If someone else can chime in on this, I would really like to know (got my interest all worked up)

The general public likes slow smooth shifts, thats why the transmission is designed this way. What really happens is you get shift overlap, its still in one gear while going to the next and with long smooth shifts you get slipping of the bands causing heat and excess ware. Shifts kits eliminate shift over lap and do away with the slipping between shifts. They also increase line pressure for more positive shifts. You get a very positive shift with no hesitation between gears, feels hard some times. Trans will last longer. The general public would have a coniption and complain to high heaven.

Just my opinion,

So let me get this straight, my transmission was shifting correctly and then the dealership did the transmission oil change and now it is screwed up (Shifting smooth like butter)? Oh for crying out loud, I am LOOKING for RELIABILITY, not destruction of of the transmission. If that is the case, what are some GOOD options when it comes to installing a shift kit (What are some really reliable shift kits)? and if it comes down to it, would FLT be my best route if my transmission goes? I am new to the Silverado scene (owned 2 Cavaliers, 1 Safari) drove a 1997 Ford F250 PowerStroke Diesel (Did not own it - Company Truck) prior...so I probably know alot more about those Found On Road Dead trucks than GM's transmissions and engines (though I am learning alot). By the way I have read other threads that tell of the GM Torque Management System (Abuse Mode), anyone know if this was present on the 2006 Silverado Crew transmissions, and I would rather pay someone (a shop or dealership) to install this kit, anybody heard of a GM dealership willing to install a shift kit onto a truck, versus doing it myself (So I can blame someone if it goes 'sideways').

Well what you really should have done is not had the fluid changed at only 15,000 miles, any change under 40-50K is a waste of good fluid. I mean the engines is just about completely broken in a 10,000 miles and you have a dealer use a flush machine (which some people would say is not good for any transmission) on a new truck? But anyway, B&M has always had some good shift kits, I have installed a few of them for friends on a 99 and a 02 silverado with good results, but of course you'll have to drop the pan and replace the fluid AGAIN....had to say that  .

The GM torque management system attempts to prolong transmission & drivetrain life by limiting engine power. I believe all trucks 99 and up have this TM feature built into the PCM. A custom tuner such a westers or wait4me performance can remove a specified % of that management or remove it all together or a combination utilizing the tow-haul button, usually referred to as the haul ass button after TM is removed. This will really wake up the performance side of your truck but might not be what you want if you are just looking for reliability.

I highly doubt a GM dealership will install a shift kit for you, since you are modifying an internal part of the transmission which will void your warranty (at least until you try and fight it) with most dealers.
