6.0l Exhaust Question

Ok.... before I start, I just want to say that I realize this is not for everyone, not everyone likes these things... and some see it as the "cheap man's exhaust".... I realize that. I just have a couple questions.

That being said, I am curious about Electronic Exhaust Cutouts for my stock 6.0L. Call it being a young kid who likes toys.... but I LOVE the idea of being able to be nice and loud and expressive so everyone knows your coming, just as much as the next man. BUT I also enjoy my nice quiet stock exhaust.... example coming home late at night, driving by police, pulling up in my grandmothers driveway. Thus my interest in the cutouts.

Now... my question is will these cause any problems with my truck. I have heard that i will lose some power, but honestly I'm not too worried about that. I do not haul 10,000lb trailers like a lot of you, My truck is a work truck. Carrying around tools and cabinets

I would really love to do exhaust cutouts, but being new in the truck world, and being ignorant.... I want to hear input from people and their thoughts on pros vs. cons.

So if you have made it this far reading this post, then please at least give your opinion. positive or negative

The only cutouts I have actually seen were pretty poorly made. Not sure if there are better quality ones or not! A little trial and error might be in order. I think you can still order cutouts from Jegs or Summit Racing.

I've purchased speed equipment (headers, etc.) from both of them and like Summit better personally.

Opinion? It's your truck. If you want to do it I say go for it. You can always return it to original later if you hate it.

I wouldn't recommend a cut-out on a truck thats even remotely stock. Maybe on a heavily modded track car... but these big heavy trucks need that low-end torque to get off the line, even without a trailer. Depending on where you put the cut-out, it would eliminate a lot of that low-end torque.

Basically, it's just going to kill your power and make a lot of noise (not to mention some serious drone).

Yeah i hear ya... I was looking up different companies.... QTP seems to be a good company with a lot of good reviews. I have a friend with a 6.1L SRT8 Charger with the dual cutouts, and wow... it sounds monsterous when open... and stock when closed.

QTP makes different sizes from 2 1/4 to 4"

and I believe mine is 3 1/2

I probably sound like a broke record recommending Corsa, but if you like quiet, you won't hear it at cruise, but when you want to be heard, just nail the loud pedal. It's the best of both worlds. I don't know why other muffler companies haven't done something like the Corsa set-up, but it'll be the last muffler set up you'll ever need.

The only downside is with Corsa is that you have to purchase a whole system, you can't purchase just a muffler. But I guess that is how you control quality and making sure that their system is not the problem.

Like it was said before unless you're making ungodly amounts of horsepower, cutouts won't do anything but make noise - and undisciplined noise, not that roar one hears from a Pantera or vintage Vette, but just noise.

Correct. But I suppose my point is that I really wouldn't want to ever push the button to open it up in the first place.

But as SSCrew said, if you want it loud when it should be, and you want it to sound good, Corsa is the way to go. I mean, making something loud for the sake of being loud isn't a goal I would personally have. It needs to sound good AND improve performance.

That's like painting your truck neon green just for the sake of standing out. Sure, you would stand out... just not in a good way.

But hey, that's just my opinoin, of course.

True true, I guess im just curious because i have heard them on that charger which is all motor and stock exhaust. I dont have a video of his, but i found a video of a SRT 300C, same setup. I like the sound of it, but everyones opinions are different. I'm sure it would sound different on my truck, even though it's a 6.0 vs 6.1

That 300C sounds lusty with the cut-out! That really makes me want to go that route. QTP has a great rep BTW, and it would be sweet to hear a VortecMax with that kind of setup, with a tune for it of course.

Thats what intruiges me about it... that 300 sounds so sweet... and that engine is almost the exact same size.... so I'm curious what it would sound like on mine

I honestly think it is kinda stupid to have one on a (lets be realistic) slow truck. It's ungodly loud at full throttle and if you don't have a quick vehicle to back all that noise well..... . I say stick with a nice catback from say Borla or Magnaflow. Leave the cut-outs to the fast cars .

Honestly, for me it's not about trying to gain power out of my exhaust, If I wanted power, I'd throw a paxton, or a GT35R and all the supportiung mods... The reason I want to do a nice exhaust is I want to hear my engine. Call it immaturity, but I love that Obnoxious throaty V8 sound. But like I stated before, I also, at times, really like my nice quiet exhaust for when I'm coming home at 3am or driving by cops, or even pulling up in my grandmothers driveway.

That and I have looked at Stainless Steel exhaust kits for this thing, and installed if I do it right with 3" duals its gonna cost me close to a grand total with the install... because it will end up being a custom job, and this thing is so long i need a lot of pipe. OR I can pay 199 for the cutout and maybe 100 tops to have it installed and tig welded.

I'd like to give it a try... and he!!, if I dont like it... I'll do the full exhaust and sell the cutout

Well, If you are going to go the cut out route. I'll give ya some tips. The electric cut-outs, esp on daily driven vehicles (which my Z28 is not) seem to have some issues with coming loose, rattling and falling off the actual cut-out, this may be even more prevalent on a truck with a rather stiff suspension causing even more vibration so a good installation is key to avoiding these problems. Also take a look at DHM cut-outs as QTP's are also notorious for the electric motors going bad.A lot of guys run DHM with good resutls as well. There is also a company out there that sell a wireless cutout (only needs 12volts run to it and has a little key fob remote). I think there is also a brand Mccord to look into as well.

Thank you for ur input man. I really appreciate it. I am in the middle of asking the QTP manufacturer a couple questions. I was leaning towards QTP because it is a very popular cutout, and I have heard a lot of good things about them. But I don't want the motor going up on it, so I want some answers from them before I purchace. They have already assured me that there will be no leakage problems... so we'll see about that. And I will be having my guy at the bopdy shop install and weld it all for me. Professional install is a must for something like that.

That 300C sounds bad ass!

I'm thinking of doing cut outs inbetween my cats & mufflers. I'm gonna have Super 44s in pretty soon, and I'd like to mess around with open cut outs sometimes. closed running the exhaust through town, then once i'm out of town on the high evelation hills open them up and enjoy the sound.
