Loose Side Mirrors On My 2007 Nbs Silverado

Recommended Posts

Posted

Alright, this has been frustrating to me for the past 3 months I have owned my truck. I have a NBS 2007 Silverado with the LT package and less than 5K miles on it.

Since I even drove the truck home, my side mirrors have "shook" and "popped" when I reach highway speeds of about 65mph+. The best way I can describe it is that it looks like the wind is whipping the mirror back and forth. I can stand there with my fingertips on the mirror and rock it back and forth, up and down and you can visibly see that it moves. It is extremely annoying, makes it difficult to see in them to pass, and makes me a little queasy.

I have been to two seperate dealerships on two seperate occasions to try and have this fixed. I was told by the first that they recalibrated them due to a TSB that was sent out by GM about the loose mirrors. However, on the way home the damned things started doing the same thing. Last weekend I went to Dallas to visit my father and had a dealership look at them up there. They said they recalibrate the mirrors as well, and on the way home....sure enough the damned things shook. They told me they test drove my truck and that they didn't notice anything (isn't that how it always works).

The mirrors on my truck are the middle-grade side mirrors from GM. All ABS plastic, manual fold-in, eletronically adjusted with the heater option. It doesn't have the side blinker nor does it have a rubber gasket around the edge of the mirror as I have seen on the Yukons and higher end Silverados. I went to the Shevy dealership and was playing with the mirrors out there tonight and I noticed the higher end models don't jiggle and neither do the non-electrical adjusting mirrors. However, I noticed most of the type my truck has jiggle back and forth.

Is there any way I can get ahold of this TSB as well as any advice on how to fix these mirrors myself or what I need to tell these mechanics?I am at my wit's end with the techs at the dealership and am overall dissapointed in the apparent quality of the mirrors.

This bulletin is being revised to update the warranty information. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 06-08-64-027D (Section 08 - Body and Accessories).

Condition

Some customers may comment that the left outside rearview mirror glass shakes or flutters at normal driving speeds.

Cause

• The mirror may have been accidentally pushed in manually or obstructed while folding.

• The mirror actuator screws may be loose, allowing the mirror to move.

• The metal spring (driver's side) left mirror may not have enough tension to hold the mirror from moving.

Correction

Follow the procedure below to correct this condition.

  1. The power folding mirrors should be cycled three complete times to relearn the mirror positions. Then perform a road test and check the mirror glass for stability. If stability is not fixed, proceed to Step 2.
Remove the mirror glass. Refer to Mirror Face Replacement in SI.
Check the torque on the four retaining screws on the actuator. Tighten

Tighten the screws to 1.13-1.6 N·m (10-14 lb in).

Bend the metal spring (driver's side mirror) up to increase the tension engagement to the mirror housing 13 mm (1/2 in).

  2. Install the glass assembly by pressing firmly, taking care not to allow the spring finger to unseat from its intended track in the mirror housing. Road test the vehicle. If stability is not improved, replace the left mirror assembly. Refer to Power Mirror Replacement in SI.

Happy to help since I have the same problem with my 2006 Silverado, my dealer took care of it by replacing the whole mirror on both sides as well as the mounting bracket (left the outer abs plastic) and volia - no more wobble :idiot: , and if you have a dumb dealership, make sure to let THEM drive it with you in it for at least 10 minutes FREEWAY before taking it back.

Wow I don't think I have ever had such a definitive answer like that so fast. Thank you!

No problem, just make sure to get that fixed, dont wanna see a damaged or wrecked Silverado because GM cant get it right on the mirrors, post any other concerns with the 2007 Silverado so I know what I will be getting into (looking to trade).

.......nor does it have a rubber gasket around the edge of the mirror as I have seen on the Yukons and higher end Silverados. .......

I had my mirrors changed in my 2002 so that I can have the signal lights in the mirrors (great for towing).

Anyways, the passenger side shakes like crazy. My mechanic friend who changed the mirrors for me did not put back the rubber gaskets in the mirrors.

Now I wondering if that is why it shakes; the driver's side does not.

Does anyone know what purpose the rubber gasket makes ?

supposed to keep that sucker from doing what its doing, as well as keep all of the wiring seated (from hanging out whenever the mirror rotates), I think that when he popped the actual mirror (glass) out, he did not reseat it correctly, if not enough pressure is there or a tab is broken, then it will shake, I'd see about getting a new gasket reinstalled and making sure it is seated properly

BTW James, never did get a reply for the A/C, here is the original message:

Subject:Rattle Popping Snapping Type Noise In Left Center IP Air Deflector - keywords A/C air blower conditioning deflector duct heater high HVAC instrument panel vent whistle #PIT4485 - (08/31/2007)

Models:2007-2008 Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe

2007-2008 GMC Sierra, Yukon, Yukon Denali, Yukon XL, Yukon Denali XL

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Some customers may comment about a rattle/popping/snapping type noise in the left center IP air deflector when the blower is on. This condition may be due to the air flow door being loose and vibrating. If the thumb wheel, to close off the air flow, is slightly rotated the noise will be eliminated or reduced.

Recommendation/Instructions:

To correct this concern, remove the left center air outlet deflector. With the airflow door in the full open position, to allow air flow, install a piece of black foam tape (obtained locally) along the top and bottom of the deflector housing so it just touches the air flow door. The foam tape should be positioned on the side of the air flow door so it does not obstruct the door from closing. With the foam tape properly installed, the air flow door will slightly contact the foam tape when in the full open position, preventing the door from vibrating.

2007 GMC Sierra Extended or Crew Cab Models

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Some owners may comment of a high pitch whistle noise while driving at highway speeds with the HVAC system off. This noise may occur if the recirculation door is in the Recirculation mode, and will go away if put in Fresh Air mode. This noise is caused by air whistle between the recirculation door and HVAC case.

Recommendation/Instructions:

To correct this concern install 1/2 inch (12.5 mm) wide by 1/8 inch (3 mm) thick open cell foam tape on the recirculation door. The foam tape should be applied along both sides and along the hinge side of the door as shown below. Before installing the foam tape clean the door with denatured alcohol, acetone, or equivalent in the area that the tape will be applied.

I think its for water protection and vibration , I Had my passenger mirror shake once after I broke it, The glass guy didnt reinstall it all the way, If im remembering right there are tabs on the mirror that click into openings behind where that rubber boot is, its easy to figure out if you look at it long enough!

I would say this is the same problem that james is having

I have the same problem with my NBS 2007 Silverado LT, same mirrors as you (not heated though, at least I dont think). I told them about it at my first oil change and they have ordered a new mirror. It was only my drivers side mirror that was shaking. When I get it changed out, I will tell you if it fixes it.
