2002 S10 Transfer Case Problem

Hi

My son has a 2002 S10 ZR5 4x4 with push button four wheel drive. He took it into the dealer because when he pushes the button to go from 2 wheel hi to 4 wheel hi it won't switch in fact he can't get the truck out of 2 wheel hi range. He told me he could hear sounds coming from the Transfer Case area when he pushes the button. The dealer told him it was some kind of Module I think he said a TCM Module which costs around $900.00 Does anybody know if it could be anything else causing the problem due to the fact the dealer told him this part was not covered under warranty.
