Cost To Regear A 4x4

Do you approximately how much it will cost to regear a silverado 4x4, parts and labor? Currently have 3.42's and might want to go to 4.10's.

generally, a set of gears will run you between $130-$150 and seeing that it's a 4x4 you'll need 2 sets. I've seen install labor charges anywhere from $200-$350 per differential, so a ballpark figure would be between $650 and $1000 depending on labor charges

I've received two estimates: $1500 and $1700. Both quotes are from reputable facilities using OEM gears.

wow 1500-1700 that's a lot of cash. I think I'll start shopping too for someone to do this.

I would be very careful who touches your diff's. Special tools and skill are a must.

The guy who offers you a smokin' deal just might not be a qualified differential tech and that could cost you much more than $1500 done by a qualified shop.

dealerships around here want around $600 just for labor on 1 set of gears. You can find other qualified shops that have the tools and ability to do it just as good but for half the cost of a stealership. Call around, but make sure they have some kind of warranty. If they aren't setup correctly they will either whine while cruising or while accelerating or decelerating.

If you're lucky you'll have an axle shop somewhere nearby. Most dealerships will farm this type of work out to the axle shops anyway, so eliminate the dealer markup and go straight to the source. Just don't take it to the neighborhood goodyear/jiffylube/firestone/etc. Find the shop that does this kind of work. There's usually enough market for this to keep a good shop going. Look for the guys who repair ag tractors/kenworths/peterbuilts/all the local light duty trucks. Talk with them about how you'll be using the truck, then take their advice about what kind of setup you need. Most of the time you'll pay a bit more (maybe a few hundred), but if the shop knows what they're doing you'll never have to worry about the gears again.

For the kind of price you where quoted you should get excellent gears, and a decent locker in the rear, all set up very expertly.
