A/c Allowing Outside Air When Speeding!

Hi there-

This is really annoying as I'm sick of smelling stuff when I'm on the highway.

I will be having the A/C switched on with temp switch not set always to coolest point. & when I do speed on the highway I feel that the vents are opening up and allowing outside air. even though the internal circulation switch is activated!!

How can I overcome this issue? I want to control this by my self, that's why there are switches for such needs!

I wish that when I turned the outside air circulation to its lowest setting, that it would actually NOT allow any more outside air in. Yet it still lets in air. Why don't we have an ALL INCLUSIVE OFF SWITCH? No air, none, zip, I-wanna-suffocate-in-this-95-degree-Florida-heat button?

I never understood that. And I can't turn the inside air circulation to the lowest setting or it defaults back to outside air circulation. What is the deal?!?!

I was hoping others would chime in on whether this was happening to them also, and what their thoughts were on this.

The recirculate function still allows about 20% outside air to be mixed with the airflow to keep fresh air in the system. It never actually shuts off outside air completely. It's mainly there to allow maximum air conditioning when it is really hot outside. By circulating mostly inside air the cab is cooled faster and kept cooler. This is why smells are still getting in.

I think it also has something to do with letting fresh air in, to cut down on the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, in case of an exhaust least...

not any car that I drove before that was letting fresh air in when I didnt want to.

I'm sure they have a better system to prevent poisoning without making us smell stuff!!

Yeah, they should all be made like that... Don't let in ANY outside air. You'd eventually suffocate, from a lack of oxygen.......

Whether you've noticed it or not, you've always been getting some fresh / outside air, even if you turn the system OFF.

Back in the late 60's people were getting carbon monoxide poisoning driving there vehicles because the shut of all the air flow into the cabin. It became such an issue the government required a minimum flow of outside air into the cabin. That is whey you cannot shut off the fresh air 100%.

Redvett is right.

Even when you have your system set to OFF, the blower is pulling outside air in at a low speed. If there is a smell out there... you are gonna smell it. Setting it to recirculate helps but does not eliminate the outside air coming inside.

I do understand that - but the amount of smells coming in my truck is WAY more than any other car I drove!

I just need to know if there's a way to REDUCE it or at least fit a hell good filter that takes off funny smells

You know... after reading all of this again... It copuld be POSSIBLE that the recirc function on yours isn't working. Maybe that is why you notice it so much more?

Anything can happen. If the door that closes in the HVAC box isn't closing completely when you select recirculate you would certainly notice more outside smells. It's worth having it checked.

I'm having a similar problem on my 01' Tahoe. The recirc button works, but kicks off after ~15 min. If the "vent" is on, there is air pushing into the cabin at very high speeds. It is 10F out right now and i have to keep the front and rear heat turned up to keep the cabin warm.... the passenger side is the worst though-- right where your right foot goes. If you keep your feet down there, even with shoes & pants on, it will freeze. It doesn't matter whether the "fresh" air button is on or off--- i can't always keep it on recir because the windows fog.

help :)

I dont think you have a problem. The recirc button also runs your AC compressor, Thats why the air is cold. It kicks out after 15 mins because its sensing outside air temp. Just leave your button on fresh air and turn the heat up and the vent down to a lower speed.

The air is pouring in on the passenger side @ your right foot. If you put your hand down there, it is almost like there is an air vent straight from the 10F ambient air-- when you get to 70-80mph and it drops to 0F outside, the driver feels & the passenger needs a blanket because it is coming in faster than the heater is putting air out. This can't possibly be normal-- is there any linkage that could be broken under the dash?

None of the above replies are correct about adding outside air... Most likely your bumping into the A/C compressor cut-out that comes into play at or near WOT... so you can have full juice, goes warm because the compressor shuts off. You need to drive a bit easier....
