I am replacing my engine due to a head gasket. Any sugestions on a plug and play engine for a 1995 5.7 Yukon? I would like a little more power than the stock 200 HP.

I know of a local engine builder that used to do a 275hp/380tq 350 for the TBI engines. it would be for you to get a nice cam from lunati or comp and that would give you a nice power increase over stock. i've heard from the parts manager at a local gmc dealer that doing the vortec head swap is a real power boost on these trucks. somewhere around 35-45 hp if you have a good breathing exhuast and he's seen as much as 60hp increase on trucks that already had a aftermarket cam installed. Vortec heads are really good and cheap, I use vortec bowite heads on my race car, i stepped up from old ported double hump heads and gained 80hp and 600 rpm.

 

If you are looking at getting a new engine maybe you can just get a short block, nice cam or stock cam, and do the vortec heads and the intake is expensive though, almost $400 i think. You can get your engine rebuilt and jsut buy the vortec heads and intake and put on, maybe thatll save you some money. A local Napa did an engine for me for under $600 two years ago.

I am looking for about 275 HP. Since I decided to install my own engine I am going with a brand GM Goodwrench for about $1700. I might install a Crane cam and headers but I have not made the jump yet. I would rather not fine tune the computer.

Forget local engine rebuilders, when it's all said and done you'll have a $2,000 old, rebuilt motor that'll just wear out in 3 or 4 years. Go with a GMPP 350/290 and you'll be happy for years to come with a dependable NEW motor. It'll also be a better way to go than upgrading a goodwrench.

Forget that engine unless you're going to get a custom program. That engine peaks hp at 5100rpm and would pull to probably close to 5600 maybe more. The '96 vortec's peaks power at 4400 and mine shifted at 52-5500. that peak HP is way to high for stock timing,fuel, and trans shift points. you'd also be swapping out some other parts. You'd need to change the heads so your warrenty would be gone. you'd also need a new plexplate. If you'd want to go GM, go with a shortblock so you can get whatever cam you want and reuse al the other parts from you current engine. summitracing is a good group of people and they can hook you up with almost anything you'd need.

I dunno...the hp peaks at a high rpm, but the torque is where you want it

The 350/290 delivers 290 hp @ 5100 rpm and a solid 326 lb.-ft. of torque at 3750 rpm.

Theres a nice flat torque curve and is over 300ft-lbs from 1500 on up. Thats what I'd be looking for is a suburban, lots of grunt. Sure its not a fast engine, but it can pull a house off its foundation.

 

Its a nice low compression replacement engine and only requires 87 octane. I'd be doing this if it were me and the price was right.

Peak tq at 3750rpm is not what i'd want in a suburban. I'd say with the new LS engines that would be fine but the older trucks don't shift that high. In an old TBI 5.7 3750 just seems about 1,000rpm too high. Its all upper RPM power. you need peak tq below 3000 for grunt. here is a curve for a 5.7 vortec engine.

I'd much rather have something like this. you can easily buy the TBI vortec intake and not have to worry about changing the heads like on the 290hp crate engine which doesn't have the 72 degree center bolts like you would need and you'd also need at least a flexplate for the 290hp crate engine because its 2-peice seal.

 

I'm sure the 290 crate engine would run good but not like a engine that makes bottom end tq. If you pull a trailer you'll really appreciate the bottom end power. I think shift points are around 4200-4500? I can't remember anymore but just as the engine starts to pull hard it'll shift and feel like you're loaded down.

I agree...3750 is a little high...but it doesn't drop below 300 ft-lbs either. Any engine pushing 300 off idle is gonna have lots of balls without even winding it out.

 

MY point is that the torque on that motor isn't really a curve...more of a horizontal line. Plus...all he has to do is swap his TBI stuff over to it. Its basically a direct replacement for his engine. It would be the easiest of all the swaps he could do.

 

The graph shown is also a run shown with a 600 cfm carb. The addition of a TBI will bring the peaks down the band a bit anyway.

The 290hp crate engine is an old style engine. The heads would need replaced and he'd need to get a new flexplate. the flexplates changed in 86 along with the rear main seal. 87+ engines had 72 degree center bolts and this eninge doesn't so the heads would need replaced. I'm sure it would work, its just there are better options and being able to make more useable power for the same price without having to swap parts.

I love the 454. My cousin had a dually with a 454 and 4.56 gears. it wasn't good for top speed but it never died down on any hills with anything he ever pulled with it. awesome power.

Thanks for all the info. I am going to buy an engine next weekend. 454 is way more than I need. I am going to get a Jasper direct replacment with a hotter cam. I was going to get the NEW gm crate but I hear those are made in Mexico and I would like to avoid buying somthing from there.

    • You can install tailpipes that direct the exhaust sideways vs the OEM one that goes straight back. There are several on the market, do you own research. HOWEVER, you need to make sure the Venturi vents are still intact, otherwise it will throw a engine code. There is a sensor somewhere that detects back pressure on the exhaust. And if it doesn't collect the correct metrics, it will throw the truck into limp mode. 
    • "Teardown" is complete. Head surfaces are clean and ready, new intake is prepped and ready. Coolant drained and water pump is removed, radiator is removed, new hoses and pump are ready.   The replacement intake is also from a '95 (with I think 260k, the odometer said). Noticeably less pitting where it covers the rear coolant passages. I'm not sure if that's a tribute to more frequent use, more frequent coolant changes/upkeep, or if the intake was machined at some point. But it appears I found a good one.   My coolant hoses were original, and the lower hose still retained the factory spring inside. It's not really rusty, but it's got deposits all over it. Unsure if I should re-install it (will thoroughly clean it first). Someone said hose technology has gotten better since 1995 (has it?) and I don't need the spring. I think modern EPDM is what made those hoses last from 1995-2026, so it's a question of how much suction can the water pump really pull, and will it collapse the hose without a spring?   I'm stopped and waiting for parts, however.   When I first brought the truck home, the fan was intermittently hitting the radiator shroud. I could see someone had monkeyed with the shroud (put a bunch of cardboard as a spacer between the upper/lower shroud halves. Someone said the motor mounts have likely failed and the engine has sagged. I wasn't sure I believed that. The engine is really solid in its mounts: To remove the old intake I *just* nearly permanently welded to the heads with freshly cured RTV and gasket snot two weeks ago, I literally had to use the arms on my lift and a chain with a bolt attached to the intake to pull it loose. It almost picked the front of the truck off the ground before ....scuuuuuuuuuuup.... I could actually hear the gaskets tearing and it broke loose and the whole truck settled back down. Motor barely moved.   SO, those parts I'm waiting on... The lower radiator mounts/bushings had completely failed. The radiator needs to be insulated from the rad support, and the bushings help the rad stand at the correct height. The plastic "baffle" was also destroyed at some point. Someone had attached the shroud to it incorrectly, overlapping a joint that should have been underlapped, creating another suspect issue potentially causing things to hit the fan. Broken tabs, side is busted off, and it's perma-formed/bent where it was jimmied incorrectly.   The baffle? Unobtainum. Long since discontinued from GM, of course. Aftermarket/capa/chinese? Also unobtanium. In GM's infinite wisdom, it appears there are at least two different variations whether the Blazer is 2 or 4 door, and I can't yet tell if they shared the same part with the S-pickups. Plan B, if I can't find a viable used one, will be to create a bracket to re-assemble the critical joint I need to seal a gap with the shroud. But that will bug me, it won't be...perfect.   The water pump bolts appear to have been installed with...plumber's putty. I guess, sure, if it works...? I've found a few "backyard fixes" like that. Someone's been here before....   If I can't find someone to jam bamboo under my fingernails to fill my free time this week I think I'll install the driver's power window motor and replace the rear door speaker that's inop. I've got a genuine GM "9.5" ohm working replacement. Why GM used a non-standard resistance....nevermind. Of course they did, you can get more sound from a cheap factory amp that way.   And the saga goes on...

    • I started my install this weekend. Everything was pretty straight forward but I ran into one issue with running power through the firewall. The nipple grommet on my High Country already has a small harness running through it - has anyone else ran into this issue? And on the engine bay side, does the wire basically just penetrate the factory wiring boot? I did this on my '22 Trail Boss and it seems much easier but thats been a few years. My other thought would be possibly drilling a new hole adding a rubber grommet just to the lower left of the factory hole. Thoughts?   Has anyone used a T-harness off the Bose amp and obtained power from there? It seems a little odd that such a small amp needs 3 power leads
    • ///// Ok--Thanks for that info--I could not find yesterday when I looked for the specs on that NAPA filter what I wanted. Their website is not very user friendly. I buy all teh filters for  our three vehicles once or twice a year. Have always run NAPA Gold on everything I own....I buy it thru my Son's account for his business-which he has a Heavy Equipment repair shop-one reason he uses NAPA so much-they have such a full line of coverage for just about anything/anywhere- He gets s  good discount because of volume bought.
