First post! Bought a Silverado 08 yesterday, with remote starter prep package. Can i add this myself? I figure i would need new key fobs, the dealer said "oh around $300" I'm a "hands on" kinda guy. Thanks

If you wish to add Remote Start (RPO AP3) your truck, you will need a Kit: GM part #19154444

It comes with two remote start keyless fobs, instructions and a code. This code along with the VIN for the vehicle it is to be installed on must be called into GM TechLink Center and they will convert this over to a new VCI code that will then become available for the installing dealer to download and reprogram your BCM with. A dealer will have to do the install and you cannot just purchase the remotes and get the dealer to unlock the remote start function in your vehicle as they cannot do it without GM's assistance and the only way GM will give the dealer the new VCI is if they have the secret code that comes in the kit. should run you about $200 including installation. One thing, verify the Kit part number to be sure for your specific truck.

I ordered my truck without the remote starter, but it had the prep package. I wanted the remote start, but the only way to order it was with the "conv pkg" which included rear park assist and power adjustable pedals. I didn't want either of these. So, I just had the dealer install the remote start prior to delivery. They charged me $262 installed.

Thanks if i order from GM parts direct i assume it comes with the code, Do you think they'll give me a hard time if i get it from GMD vs dealer? The part is running 165 for 2 remotes and transmitter+labor would be extra at service dept...

I will i'm leary of the dealer down the street from me. They'll probably try to keep my truck for days(they did with my impala for a strut!) 289 plus tax which is 312.84 total from one.

even with an appointment? (an appointment meaning a service bay/lift and tech is waiting for your truck to show up) if that is the case, find another dealership..........
