Whats Wrong With My Transmission?

I hope someone can help me out here. My 2000 silverado 4x4 broke the ujoint on the slip yoke that comes out of the transfer case. It is a one piece drive shaft and I had both ujoints replaced about 2 months ago. Bought them from Advance Auto parts, and had them installed at a reputable drive shaft shop. I was leaving a stop sign making that great noise of spinning tires when I hear a loud bang and just all kinds of bad sounds. I got off the gas and coasted to the side of the road. I ended up having to buy a new slip yoke from the dealer because one of the ears broke off my original yoke. I got 2 spicer heavy duty ujoints and had them installed by a shop and had the drive shaft checked and balanced. After I put the drive shaft back in the truck, it shifts fine doesnt slip, works exactly as it used to. But it makes this ticking sound just after 20 mph, and does not stop till I get below 20 mph. The sound doesnt get louder or speed up or slow down regardless of speed. I have taken it to 2 transmission shops and have had the truck test driven with me as a passenger and also had a diagnostics machine on it. They both say the engine and trans is fine. Can someone please let me know if I did any major damage. Or at least maybe give me a clue as to what might be the problem.

There is no vibration, even at highway speeds. I would guess its balanced properly, and after driving for a couple of days, It seems to shift differently now. It seems to hunt for the next gear on light acceleration, and under full throttle, the engine seems to stumble a bit, like it is not getting enough gas. I have half a tank of gas. I checked the trans dipstick, and there is small metal pieces in the fluid. Guess its just a matter of time till I do a rebuild. Anybody know how much its gonna cost to rebuild a 4L60E? I have driven the truck up to about 40 mph and turned the engine off, the noise is still there. I figure it has to be in the drive line somewhere. The noise is still there in 2wd, 4wd hi, and 4wd lo. Thanks for the reply.

back when i had my 96 sierra some dooshe came up to me revving his engine...light turned green....spun the tires for 20 yards when i look behind me to seeing a big cloud of smoke that dosent stop...pulled over tranny fluid was pouring out of a little hole in front of the tranny...had a rebuilt one (pretty sure its the same one your talking about) installed for 2000 bucks. after i got the new tranny it shifted perfectly and ran better than when i took it off the ranch...i know i could have just told you how much it cost but i like telling storys about my old truck...lol that does seem kind soon to replace a tranny though the one in my old truck lasted 155,000 miles on it how many miles did your truck have on it?

I thought i was probably due for a rebuild, I bought the truck about a year ago for 7500. The reason for replacing the yoke and ujoints is because when they broke, I was spinning my tires. When The ujoint let go, I got off the gas as soon as possible but, I saw my rpms go up to about 6000. After I fixed the ujoints, it now is acting up.

Spinning the engine up to 6 grand with no load is a bad, bad thing. That could have hurt you pretty bad right there.

Im pretty sure the engine is ok because I can be coasting while its making the noise, I turn off the engine and it is still making the noise I was talking about. So I figure it is in the drive line. Or am I completely wrong and could I have damaged my engine?

I dont see how the ticking is in the driveline, the ticking does not vary with speed. Is there a way you could put the rear end on jacks, place the trans in neutral and manually rotate the driveline? I had to do this to isolate a failing u-joint.

The fact that it's timing doesn't change regardless of speed has got me stumped. My first thought was that the force required to break the yoke was a big one, and may have damaged a bearing or something in the tailshaft. But, it would be speed related. Very weird. You might just have to wait for it to break, or get louder to find it.

I exploded a driveshaft while plowing once...the shock took out the trany and broke the ring gear in rear end(chipped).....couldnt hurt to pull rear end cover and look for metal
