Red "brake" Light On.

Please help, Book says Red brake light only comes on if resevoir is low (its full) or emer. brake pedal is engaged (its released). Stays on all the time. Anyone know of a faulty switch and if its on the resevoir or pedal and what the reading with a meter might be if their bad? Any help would be welcome, Thanks.

Try disconnecting the battery for about 15 minutes to clear the light...If it comes back on take the truck to a autozone or other parts store and get the error codes read for more info.

I take it from your post that the reservoir is full. If the braking system feels normal try this. Remove the electrical connector from the side of the reservoir. If the light goes out you have found the problem. Replace the entire revervoir as the float inside has malfunctioned. Easy fix, no bleeding of the system, just a bit messy.

Same could be said for the emergency brake switch. It may be out of adjustment or broken. (If the brakes seem ok otherwise)

This would be my bet. I don't know on your YM but the switch may be a screw turn type adjustment that has vibrated to the point of insufficient contact with the emerg brake pedal lever, or a weak return spring. Try nudging the pedal up with your toe.

I had the same problem on our 1990 square body suburban. After reading this thread I unplugged one of the plugs on the black box on the side of the master cylinder. The light would not come on so I plugged it back in. Then I noticed one wire from the black box to the master cylinder. I tried to unplug it but it only popped loose and twisted around so I pressed it back down. The brake warning light came on in test mode and then went out like it should. That plug must have gotten crudded up over the years and lost its connection. Maybe twisting it around a little cleaned it up. Thanks for the help.

Verify that the PARKING BRAKE is fully releasing and check the switch on it to be sure it is working properly. You also need to verify that the brake fluid reservoir low fluid switch is working properly. These are basic checks and you still may have something more happening here, such as a wiring issue, etc.

That worked for me.

 

Fluid level was good...Parking brake switch was fine and all wiring good to go. Disconnected the terminals...Cleaned them up and reconnected them...The light was gone.
