Time For New Battery

Recommended Posts

Well now that it's getting cold out, my rig is sounding weak on the start-up in the morning. Took it to Auto Zone and ran a charging test on it...alternator good, starter good, battery...not BAD but not GOOD. I've been eyeing the optima 6-packs...suggestions??

I recently bought two new batteries for my truck and was going to go with the Optimas. However, the guy I talked to at my local auto parts store said that recently people were having a lot of problems with the Optimas. Now I'm not bashing Optimas, because I've heard a lot of good things about them, and the guy said that perhaps it was just bad luck and a couple bad batches. In any event I ended up going with a couple Bosch batteries. I bought the best Bosch ones that they had, which are less expensive than the Optimas and have similar CCA/RC/CA ratings and have a slightly longer warranty. Very happy with them so far.

I've gt an Optima Red Top going on 5 years and 150,000 miles and still starting strong at -8F yesterday morning.

I 've used Optima batteries in the last three trucks I've owned. They are (IMO) the best batteries made. I like the idea of being able to mount these batteries upside down if you are so inclined (but see no reason to in a daily driver). The warranty is tops as well. I have the red top in my Sierra and am looking at getting one for my wife's new 4Runner. I say buy the Optima and not worry about anything else.

OPTIMA batteries are certainly good but man... do you ever pay for them.

At about 3 times the going rate for a battery it would have to last 10 years to be worth the money. I'm not knocking Optima at all but I can't see why I would want to pay so much for a battery when the "regular" batteries I have purchased in the past have performed very well.

Is there something I am not seeing here?

OPTIMA batteries are manufactured by Johnson Controls.

Johnson Controls makes Diehard (Sears), Duralast (AutoZone), Interstate, Kirkland (Costco), Motorcraft (Ford), and some EverStarts.
