My Wife Drove It In 4hi For 40 Miles

...on DRY pavement. When I went to move it tonight, it was still in 4hi. I put it back into 2hi and moved it, then just for giggles put it in 4Hi, then 4Lo to see what happened. Not to my surprise, the 4WD is now not working. THere is a very audible clicking in the front end when the rear tires are spinning. It is a 1992 Chevy K1500, 5.7 AT, manual shift transfer case. I know there is an actuator in the front Diff that engages the 4WD, is it possible it's as simple as replacing that? In previous experience, something breaks INSIDE the differential requiring a re-build. Thoughts and/or ideas? PM or e-mail me please!

just play with it... if you got it to go back into 2WD it will probably go back into 4WD. Driving on dry pavement isn't necessarily good for them but i don't see it messing up the 4WD. at least not in 40 miles.

but hey, i could be wrong. wouldn't be the first time.

Its my opinion that driving a 4x4 (especially an older one) that long on dry pavement will damage something. My dad had his on in his 02 for 10 miles going 70 and it burned all the oil out and caused it to seize up. Check the fluid level.

on those older pickups and SUVs it will probably cause damage, especially if a lot of turns were taken. You might have to take it in to a dealer or transmission shop

I drove my '92 in 4HI for MANY miles on several occasions (mountains in Colorado). A lot more than 40 miles on dry pavement too (I'd forget that it was in 4hi).

It was ALWAYS a bitch to get it to shift into 4LO from the day I bought it. It would also kick out of 4LO sometimes too. Never had a problem getting 4HI to work though.

Just a thought, but do you have the tranny in neutral when you're shifting (some people don't do it that way) the transfer case?

Whenever I shift the transfercase I have it in neutral and I am stopped. I don't do any shifting on the fly because of the trucks age and mileage.

So far it looks like the carrier survived, the transfer case DOES go into 4WD and the front shaft spins. I found the left front drive axle destroyed inside the boot. I'll replace that first to see if I get the 4WD back.
