crepitus Posted December 15, 2007 Posted December 15, 2007 I have an 06 Sierra with the G80 locker. It seems to work ok but in the snow is where i notice a problem. It has done this since new. When the rear tires are spinning the locker is clunking like its engaging and disengaging. Is this normal? I had a 00 S10 witht he same locker and it never made any noise. Just the inital clunk when engaging.
2005LT Posted December 15, 2007 Posted December 15, 2007 I have an 06 Sierra with the G80 locker. It seems to work ok but in the snow is where i notice a problem. It has done this since new. When the rear tires are spinning the locker is clunking like its engaging and disengaging. Is this normal? I had a 00 S10 witht he same locker and it never made any noise. Just the inital clunk when engaging. My 2005 does this too. My 1995 GMC Sierra 6.5 diesel with G80 also did this to some extent. Depended on the condition of the ice/snow i was on. The 95' was more like your S10 too, seemed to lock up and stay that way till the spinning stopped. With my 2005 to stop the "chattering" i either give it some more throttle to spin some more or back off altogether to let the spinning tire grab. It is annoying at times that's for sure. Sounds normal to me though for the GMT 800 trucks.
bmx_02 Posted December 16, 2007 Posted December 16, 2007 Mine did that until last week when if finally decided to blow out my whole differential now i have to shell out 1100 to fix where as i could have probably just bought a rebuild kit for a quarter the price and prevented it!! you win some you lose some!
RyanZ71 Posted December 16, 2007 Posted December 16, 2007 Yup. The newer G-80s (from 99 on up) are not as strong as the older gens. When mine was rebuilt, they put in the older gen style which the diff shop who did it stated they hardly ever see any failures in them compared to the 99+ which when they came out he started seeing a major increase in failures. Does not matter what type of oil or how often you change it, they still blow up. (and no I was not abusing mine)
crepitus Posted December 17, 2007 Author Posted December 17, 2007 ok thanks. u guess i will just have to try and blow it in the next 12000 miles. still under warranty
ujtruck Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 ok thanks. u guess i will just have to try and blow it in the next 12000 miles. still under warranty My 07 NBS truck has G80 too. but it dosen't make any clunk... is that mean I have strong one ? or should I blow it like crepitus is saying before warranty run out ?
