98 Yukon Intake Gasket Replacement (setting Distributor)

I finally got around to changing the intake gaskets on my 98 Yukon with 5.7, I also changed the heater hose quick connect, distributor gear and knock sensor while I had things apart. The posts on this forum were helpful for the procedure, but I wanted to make sure the distributor was set correct. I marked everything and took pictures and it went smoothly. Started up and ran fine with no codes. A couple of things that I learned.

1) When you have the battery disconnected for a couple of weeks, all the emissions testing the ECM does is reset and shows "not completed" when hooked up to the laptop with OBD2 tool. I needed to have an emission test done to renew my license tabs so it failed the first test with the tests not complete (had to drive it a few days or I could have done the "drive test"). It passed fine when the tests completed.

2) You need an OBD2 tool and software that has the enhanced codes to set the distributor (or know someone with expensive scan tool (or go to the dealer)), Camshaft retard degrees (CMPRTD) is NOT part of the normal codes you can read with free software.

I purchased the tool and software from from http://www.obd-2.com/. My Yukon was not listed so I emailed the sales link, they added the enhanced codes within a week. It shipped promptly and worked right away. I only bought the tool that works with some GMs (GM VPW, not CAN) but you can get one that works with all the major automakers, including the new CAN protocol.

Remember to rev above ~1200 to refresh the reading when setting it. Mine was at -0.2 degrees (spec is 0.0 plus or minus 2 degress).

From the website...

If you will be using on more than one type of car you can:

Mix or match any two, three or all 4 OBD-2 networks in one combo router as a 2.1, 3.1 or 4.1 car reader

DOUBLE COMBO - contains any two of the above networks $142

TRIPLE COMBO - contains three networks for use on most vehicles $162

TRICOM - contains three networks with integral car connector $182

TRICAN - Includes New Control Area Network (CAN) plus all previous networks to support all 1996-2008+ vehicles $240

Only one cable and connector needed, combo router box selects correct vehicle network. Supports both serial port and optional USB

Notes: TRICAN and TRICOM does not support 2002.5-2005 Dodge Chry Jeep VPW extra enhanced data, or all network messages.

ISO protocol vehicles and USB, use only optional Car Code USB adapter $12

Have a Merry Christmas!
