I see that the 08 model year still offers the 4.3 .With the 4.8 getting the same mileage why even bother .Not saying its not a great engine I just think its a little under powered for this vehicle. If you ask me it should be in the colorado/canyon instead of the 5 banger.Just kinda venting on some of GM's moves to make profit and wanting to hear every one elses input.

It does knock off $1000 if you get it instead of the 4.8 so for some buyers it makes sense.

The motor has been around forever and Ive heard its good and durable. I would have got one if it got at least 2 more MPGs but its rated the same so I figured why not get 50% more power for $1000? It seems like maybe its time for GM to make a more powerfull, efficient motor, especially with the new mileage requirements coming.

1990 Chevrolet 1500 4.3 Manual Transmission Regular Cab Long Bed - Scottsdale Model.

It certainly is durable for me at least. Nothing done to engine. Doesn't leak. Always starts.

With the new MPG ratings things may change for this base model engine.

I do think that much has to do with Fleet Sales. Utilities, Public Works, Highway Departments, etc. These people buy the lease expensive with few if any options. And they are continual customers year after year.

I worked for the state Highway Department decades ago. The supervisor had an orange Chevrolet 1500 stepside with an inline six cylinder and manual 3 on the column. Stripped model. Times are changing though as more and more are opting for the 4WD model. I think they still offer 4WD with this engine.

It's Fleet Sales and of course, money.

I have also heard great things about the 4.3, a far as I'm concerned its been "bullet Proof". I had the same engine in my 03 S-10 ZR2 Pick up........ I hate the fact that the Colorado came with a 5 in it other wise I would have had one of those rather then my last vehicle, witch was a Trailblazer.

I believe GM had 2 versions of the 4.3, a 190HP and a 210hp...

Have a 94 jimmy(for sale btw) sitting here. The ONLY thing that i have not had a problem with up to this point is the engine. 298000Km's on that 4.3 and it still runs great. If ther is one thing GM is known for, it is building amazing gas engines.

Bulletproof without a doubt, it is a 5.7L with two cylinders chopped off after all.

The 4.3 has a massive following in fleets. Many are geared up to it and the associated maintenance of it so why change? It makes adequate power for city, county, or utility company work trucks and is at least $1000.00 less expensive to purchase. Every year GM sells gobs of regular cab longbed trucks to them. I would imagine this has something to do with it still being around... plus it is a good torque producing 6 cylinder engine that is extremely reliable to 200,000 miles and beyond.

Makes me wonder how well the 4.3L V8 (yes they actually produced a 4.3L V-8 back in the early to mid 90s for the Caprice, Roadmaster & Fleetwood) would compare to the 4.3 V6, probably just as good if not better fuel economy...

did they do something different for them for 07-08? They sound a whole lot different, one was idling at my work the other day and it sounded like my 5.3L

I'd take the 4.3L over the 4.8L anyday.

Its bulletproof. Ive had this truck 2 years, and zero engine problems. Started every...single...time.

I know a few guys who had gasket problems in their 4.8L, a bunch of other oddball items...i'd still stick with a classic workhorse.

The 4.3 V8 was made for upper rpms(peak HP at 5200rpm) and the 4.3 v6 was made for lower end rpms(peak HP at 4600). because of the V6 having a larger bore you could put largers valves in it. 4.3 v6 was 4" bore and 4.3 v8 was 3.73" bore (same as 305). the 4.3 v8 was 200hp(5200 rpm) and 235 lb/ft torque(2400rpm), the current 4.3 v6 is 200hp(4600 rpm) and 260 lb/ft torque(2800rpm). if you build two of them up I'd think the v6 would be on top. In SBC engines, valve size matters a lot and you just can't get the big valves in the little v8. :)
