For building an off road truck what's your pick? I was thinking about a 2500 for the stronger chassis, and a diesel because well I love torque! Would the added weight of the diesel cause problems? I'm not talking any exreme offroading, just moderate difficulty stuff.

 

After the chassis choice would you go with a regular cab short box, for minimum length, or would i be fine with say a regular or extended cab long box?

 

It's alot of poll but I'm curious. haha, thanks for your replies guys.

1500 or 2500 doesnt matter much but the 2500 is a little heavier then the 1500 and built stronger. Forget about a diesel offroading and mudding as there is two things that kill it offroad, (1) is the weight of the front due to the motor and (2) is diesels dont rev high max rpm is around 3200-3600 rpm so the wheel speed you need mudding wont be there. Instant throttle response in a gas motor is what you need offroad diesels dont have this, by the time you feal the truck bog down in some heavy mud and nail the throttle in a diesel to get wheel speed to spin and clean the treads in the tire and by the time the turbo spools up and the diesel makes its power yer stuck.

Most of the upgrade in a 2500 is suspension... isn't it? If you install a 6 inch aftermarket lift, you'll be replacing all of the suspension anyway. Seems like the 1500 might be your better bet.

 

Unless... the 2500 has a better transfer case or transmission. Or maybe beefier axles? I don't know what all is different.

 

Hell, I think I'm talking myself out of my own opinion. I think I'll just sit back and see what happens here. :tear:

Yeah... there are probably real reasons to upgrde to the 2500 if you intend to get serious. The 2500 only comes in a RCLB I believe... as a Reg Cab anyway. For real wheelin, I like the RC setup.

I say that if you were to build a big truck the best would be to do it with a 2500HD. They are designed right from the start with stronger transmissions, axles (half shafts), and suspensions. I would also say in this case a RCLB would be the best option because it is the lightest of the 2500HD series. From what I have seen when a truck is going to see conditions that push it to the limit a heavy duty truck will stand stronger every time.

I never even thought of the fact that you can't get a rcsb 2500, but I love my rclb 1500 so that option works out perfectly for me :tear:

 

Jake, can you explain the difference between half shaft axles and what's in a 1/2 ton?

Half shafts are what comprise the front axle in an independent front suspension, both 1500 and 2500 trucks have them. The difference between them is no different then stepping up to a larger rear axle, just every part is going to be built bigger and stronger. If you look between your wheel and the axle housing in the front suspension, you will see them. I have had friends with lifted half ton trucks that have broke parts in these when the suspension gets twisted up, that is why I mentioned it.

Do you own a Duramax? It doesnt sound like it. My turbo spools just fine and has no lag. Revs have nothing to do with it, the Duramax will have the same wheelspin a gasser has, and it will have it at a lower engine speed, with better fuel economy.

 

Not even mentioning that the extra weight comes from WAY beefier components.

 

I'll put up a diesel against a gasser anyday. Instant throttle response? Hah. I'll leave you in the dust at any speed.

 

No brainer. Stick to the C-4's. We'll handle the diesels and the C-5's. :nonod:

I knew that your truck was 2WD, I just blanked that. So you are right, there won't be much there.

 

By the way, I admire you taking on Winnipeg winters in a 2WD. The S10 in the corner was my first truck and it was 1WD like yours. It takes a bit if skill and work to handle the snow with vehicles like that.

I see people have voted for Crew Cabs, can you explain your reasoning? Keeping in mind I'm not looking for a people hauler I'm looking for an off-roading truck... Is there logic behind the vote?

Ya it just takes a little bit of finess, only times I've ever gotten stuck I was driving places I shouldnt have been... haha, once so bad that I got a sierra stuck trying to pull me out (but mostly cause the guy didn't know how to pull someone out), had CAA refuse to even try, and had the towing company that pulls the off-road guys out of the floodway get a truck stuck and almost get a second truck stuck until a 10-ton snowplow that was driving on the nearby highway come and plow a huge roadway up to us, all at 3am in -20 winds of course. :)

Up to you and what else you want to do with it. I'd personally want it to be a multi-purpose vehicle. So CC is a bit more practical from the people hauler side. RC is too small. And the doors on the EC are reaally annoying. At least to me anyways.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
