So Heres A Weird Problem...

So crazy as it sounds I'm wondering if I got a peice of glass with a major flaw in it, this would be the passanger side Extended Cab window.

Story:

 

I got in my truck after work today and merged onto the freeway, about half way home (30 mile commute) I heard a popping noise, preatty loud. I looked all over, as much as I could without hitting the traffic in front of me, did'nt see anything and kept on driving. I make it all the way to my house, get out, shut the door and walk just around the corner to the walkway to my front door and the entire window shatters. I'm talking full on, not just a crack, spider web and pieces falling all over the inside and ground outside my truck. The shards of glass scratched my paint and made a huge mess on the inside. I called the dealer and they said no dice, that a rock or something must have hit it and cracked it.

 

So now I get to buy the 250$!! extended cab window and drive around with a trash bag taped to the door of my truck, fantastic... has anyone ever heard of anything like this, should I be making more of a stink at the dealership?

15 years in the buisness and never saw a glass spontaniously shatter. Thats not to say it can't happen (I can't explain how it would without outside influence) but your going to have an uphill battle on the nothing made it shatter explanation. It could be a flaw with the vehicle caused it, something out of place hit it or .... I don't know. I think your going to end up paying for this one unless you can find a reason it might have happened.

The rock theory is legit.

 

 

I agree, I just never heard it happen, or saw it even... My girlfriend is instintant that someone shot it with a BB gun, I think she's out of her mind.

Thats possible to, done that on junk cars just cracks it and shatters it to pieces what ever it was it was not god.

Do you have glass coverage? In any case, that's very odd. I'd cruise around to the other GM forums and see if anyone else with a GMT900 has experienced something similar. If you can find a few other people with the same problem you may be on to something. Honestly though, you're probably SOL.

There was a problem with the Cadillac Line up of the SRX and the sedans where there was too much stress causing the window shattering.

The rear window shatters on the "STS".

The UltraView Sunroof shatters on the SRX.

I don't know how similar the various tempered glass applications are, but I had the glass oven door in my kitchen spontaneously explode one day. It had not been in use for at least a day. Blew little glass cubes all over the kitchen. Never figured out why. :lol:

You had bad Karma that day! Or maybe one pissed off spirit or ghost trying to get your attention. :) I think I would of had to relocate from there........

Maybe the "pop" sound was a rock hitting the glass. That's why the dealer is saying that. I have had someone shoot the backglass on my firebird and all it did was shatter it but it never fell in. I feel for ya man! I would be raising hell as much as I could until I got my way or someone told me to get out of their office lol.

      Thanks; I looked there a few minutes, and I think I can find something. I really never looked there, as I thought it was stuff like PTO/aftermarket bodies/accessories like snow plows.

      This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.

      2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.

      Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
