Stone Hit, Cracked Windshield

Recommended Posts

Stone Hit me while I am on freeway, ooh man my new NBS :) - at 1st its looking no more than a loony now 3 lines spread from that, each line 6 to 10 inches long.

What can I do at this point - Is it fixable?

Sould I go with original Glass or Aftermarket ?

what is my best option ?

Thanks in Advance.

I don't know about Canada but in many states there is zero deductable for windshield replacement. Check with your insurance company first?

My truck is only 7 months old and I have 2 cracks on the bottom going across the whole windshield. I also have a nice crack going from the bottom middle of the windshield in a nice zig zag pattern all the way to the top on the passengers side. Not to mention about 10 other rock cracks all over. Ahhh Alberta you have to love the huge rocks they use on the roads in the winter...lol

I have been up and down the AlCan 3 times now, always in winter...and I have NEVER had the size of bullseyes I recieved on those trips through BC and Yukon...you are correct, those rocks are huge in your country :)

JOE it can't be fixed...you can only fix a round "chip" or ding, you will have to replace it. Call your insurance company when it gets so bad you can't stand it. Aftermarket glass will be fine.

I also had a crack about the size of a dime. Went to local autobody and they fixed it up with heating the glass, but there is still a small little dent that is barely noticable. Did that for free :)

I have like 10 chips on the front bumper also, they use s**t loads of rocks here too in B.C.

A stone chip can be repaired with epoxy injection if cracks have not started to run out of the chip. Once the crack starts to run, that's it for the windshield. Your windshield is toast.

Original glass or aftermarket generally comes from the same place - pretty much all of it is made by PPG. If you took the truck to your dealer they would send it to a glass shop (likely Apple Auto Glass in your area) for the work anyway, or the mobile guy would come to the dealer.

Its better then the east coast and their love of salt. Id rather have a few rock chips compared to a rusted out body. I believe BC also uses a higher salt to sand ratio then alberta.

I have been up here in Nortern BC working all winter and thats how I got the big cracks....and the cold weather don't help either when you leave your truck running all the time...ahh one windshield a year is not too bad...lol

Ya I have to agree I am from the east coast living in Alberta and ya its nice to have a truck not always white in the winter. But to be honest I see more rusted vehicles out this way then back east. You would be surprised how well people take care of there vehicles back there.

Thanks Guys for quick replies

I will call insurance company tomorrow, and go for local glass man or something.

I'm not you, wich is why I'm bringing it up. but you might want to check into what the factory windshild has that an aftermarket replacement won't. I'm pretty sure the factory windshild has those black dots behind the rearview mirror for a reason.. probably protects the electronics on your rearview or something.

Thanks, Mine is $500 as well...its alot cheaper to buy the windshield yourself. I also heard that you have to becareful if you have rain sensing wipers. I don't know if this is true but I heard there is a coating on the windshield for the rain sensing wipers. I am assuming if this is true its on the inside. So be weary of that. I had someone tell me they had there windshield replaced with a new one from a glass place and the rainsensing didn't work. May be thats wrong but be sure to check it out.

I have a $500 deductible too, but they only charge me $100 for windshields. I need a new one currently. It has been 2" dia. for 5000mi. and hasn't changed yet.

In south Texas, with all the current construction, a broken windshield is more the rule, than the exception. When I bought my truck, I added a windshield protection package that pays for a new windshield or just fixing cracks. It probably would have been less expensive not to get it, but considering the risk of windshield events down here, I consider it money well spent.
